How to Reset Your Bitcoin Password
Secure Your Wallet
- Close the wallet and make a backup of your wallet file.
- Transfer all your funds to a new wallet with a strong password.
Determine the Password Type
- Wallet encryption password: Encrypts the entire wallet file.
- Spending password: Used to authorize individual transactions.
For Encrypted Wallets
- Open the wallet backup file with a text editor.
- Locate the following lines:
master_key_enc
,aes_key_enc
, andid
. - Remove the text after the first equals sign (e.g., "master_key_enc=|").
For Spending Passwords
- Go to the "Receive" tab in your wallet.
- Click on the "Clear Transaction History" button.
- Open the wallet backup file with a text editor.
- Locate the line starting with
{"derived"
, and remove it.
Save and Import
- Save the changes to the wallet backup file.
- Create a new wallet and import the modified backup file.
- Set a new password for the new wallet (encryption and/or spending).
Additional Tips
- Use a strong password manager to generate and store your passwords securely.
- Do not reuse passwords across multiple accounts or devices.
- Enable two-factor authentication for increased security.
