How to Reset Your Bitcoin Password

  1. Secure Your Wallet

    • Close the wallet and make a backup of your wallet file.
    • Transfer all your funds to a new wallet with a strong password.
  2. Determine the Password Type

    • Wallet encryption password: Encrypts the entire wallet file.
    • Spending password: Used to authorize individual transactions.
  3. For Encrypted Wallets

    • Open the wallet backup file with a text editor.
    • Locate the following lines: master_key_enc, aes_key_enc, and id.
    • Remove the text after the first equals sign (e.g., "master_key_enc=|").
  4. For Spending Passwords

    • Go to the "Receive" tab in your wallet.
    • Click on the "Clear Transaction History" button.
    • Open the wallet backup file with a text editor.
    • Locate the line starting with {"derived", and remove it.
  5. Save and Import

    • Save the changes to the wallet backup file.
    • Create a new wallet and import the modified backup file.
    • Set a new password for the new wallet (encryption and/or spending).

Additional Tips

  • Do not reuse passwords across multiple accounts or devices.
  • Enable two-factor authentication for increased security.
  • Keep your wallet software updated to the latest version for security improvements.
  • Consider using a hardware wallet for enhanced security.
