How to stake Ethereum on Trezor? (Passive income)
To stake ETH via Trezor, you need 32 ETH, firmware ≥2.5.0, staking.ethereum.org access, stable internet, Chrome/Edge with WebUSB, and physical Trezor access for key generation and deposit signing.
Apr 15, 2026 at 11:20 am
Staking Setup Requirements
1. A Trezor Model T or Trezor One firmware version 2.5.0 or higher must be installed.
2. ETH balance of at least 32 tokens held in a wallet controlled by the Trezor device.
3. Access to a staking-compatible interface such as staking.ethereum.org or MyCrypto with Ethereum 2.0 support enabled.
4. Stable internet connection and a computer running Chrome, Brave, or Edge browser with WebUSB enabled.
5. Physical access to the Trezor device during validator key generation and deposit transaction signing.
Validator Key Generation Process
1. Navigate to staking.ethereum.org and select “Launch Staking Launchpad”.
2. Choose “Use a hardware wallet” and confirm Trezor is connected and unlocked.
3. Select “Generate keys using your Trezor” — the device will display prompts for confirmation on its screen.
4. Enter a strong password to encrypt the generated keystores; this is separate from the Trezor PIN.
5. Download the resulting deposit_data.json and keystore-m_12381_3600_0_0_0-xxxx.json files to a secure local folder.
Deposit Transaction Execution
1. Return to the Launchpad interface and click “Begin Deposit” after verifying downloaded files.
2. Connect Trezor and unlock it using the correct PIN before initiating the deposit.
3. Paste the public validator key from the deposit_data.json file into the designated field.
4. Confirm the 32 ETH amount and network fee on the Trezor screen — no external signature is required beyond physical approval.
5. Finalize submission via the website; the transaction hash appears only after Trezor signs and broadcasts the deposit to the Beacon Chain.
Post-Deposit Monitoring
1. Track validator status using explorers like beaconcha.in by entering the validator public key.
2. Observe activation queue time — current average wait is approximately 14–21 days depending on total staked ETH volume.
3. Monitor sync status directly on Trezor Suite if running a full node or third-party client like Lighthouse or Prysm.
4. Check reward accruals every 6.4 minutes (one slot) and verify inclusion in attestations and block proposals.
5. Review slashing protection database backups regularly — Trezor does not store this data internally but requires user-managed export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I stake less than 32 ETH using Trezor?A: No. The Ethereum consensus layer mandates exactly 32 ETH per validator. Fractional staking requires pooled services like Lido or Rocket Pool, which do not allow direct Trezor custody of staked funds.
Q: Does Trezor store my withdrawal credentials?A: Yes — the withdrawal credentials are derived from your mnemonic and stored securely within the device. They are never exposed to the browser or host machine during key generation.
Q: What happens if I lose my Trezor after staking?A: Your validator remains active on-chain. You can restore full control using the original 24-word recovery seed on any compatible device, including another Trezor unit.
Q: Is staking reward income taxable at the time of accrual or distribution?A: Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction. In many regions including the U.S., staking rewards are taxed as ordinary income upon receipt, regardless of whether they are withdrawn or remain bonded.
