How to stake Cosmos (ATOM) on Ledger
Stake your ATOM via Ledger Live to earn rewards, secure the Cosmos network, and support decentralization—all while keeping your keys safe on your hardware wallet.

Understanding Cosmos (ATOM) and Staking Basics
Staking Cosmos (ATOM) allows users to participate in the network’s consensus mechanism by delegating their tokens to validators. This process helps secure the blockchain and, in return, stakers earn rewards in ATOM. The Cosmos network operates on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model, meaning that users must lock up their ATOM to support network operations. When staking through a Ledger hardware wallet, users benefit from enhanced security, as private keys never leave the device.
The Cosmos Hub is the central blockchain of the Cosmos ecosystem, enabling interoperability between independent blockchains. By staking ATOM, users not only earn passive income but also contribute to the decentralization and resilience of the network. It is important to understand that staking does not transfer ownership of your tokens — they remain in your wallet, though they are temporarily locked during the unbonding period if you decide to withdraw.
Preparing Your Ledger Device for ATOM Staking
Before initiating staking, ensure your Ledger device is set up correctly. This includes having the latest firmware installed. To update your Ledger:
- Connect your Ledger to your computer using the USB cable
- Open Ledger Live and check for firmware updates under the Manager tab
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install the update directly from the Ledger Live application
After updating, install the Cosmos (ATOM) app:
- Open the Manager in Ledger Live
- Search for Cosmos in the app catalog
- Click Install and confirm the installation on your Ledger device
- Once installed, the Cosmos app will appear on your Ledger’s dashboard
Ensure you have a stable internet connection and your recovery phrase securely stored. Never share your recovery phrase or enter it on any website.
Setting Up a Cosmos Wallet in Ledger Live
To stake ATOM, you must first create or import a Cosmos wallet within Ledger Live:
- Launch Ledger Live and connect your Ledger
- Navigate to Accounts and click Add Account
- Select Cosmos (ATOM) from the list of cryptocurrencies
- Choose the account name and click Continue
- Confirm the address display on your Ledger device by pressing both buttons
Your ATOM wallet is now active in Ledger Live. If you already own ATOM, send them to the public address displayed in the app. Always double-check the address on your Ledger screen before confirming any transaction. Once funds are received, they will appear in your Ledger Live balance.
Choosing a Validator for ATOM Staking
Validators are responsible for processing transactions and maintaining network security. As a delegator, your choice of validator impacts your stake rewards and network health. Consider the following when selecting a validator:
- Commission rate: Validators charge a fee on rewards. Lower commission increases your net earnings
- Uptime and reliability: A validator with consistent uptime ensures your stake remains active
- Security practices: Research whether the validator uses robust infrastructure and key management
- Self-delegation: Validators who stake their own ATOM demonstrate confidence in their operation
- Community reputation: Active validators often participate in governance and publish regular updates
You can review validators directly in Ledger Live under the Stake section for Cosmos. Click Manage next to your ATOM account to view available validators. Each entry displays key metrics including rank, commission, and voting status.
Delegating ATOM Using Ledger Live
Once you’ve selected a validator, delegation can be completed securely through Ledger Live:
- In Ledger Live, go to your ATOM account
- Click Stake and then Delegate
- Choose a validator from the list or search by name
- Enter the amount of ATOM you wish to delegate
- Review the transaction details, including fees
- Click Continue and confirm the action on your Ledger device
Your Ledger will prompt you to verify the validator address and amount. Use the device buttons to scroll through all details and approve only if everything matches. After confirmation, the transaction is broadcast to the Cosmos network. Delegation typically takes a few seconds to confirm.
You will begin earning staking rewards after the next reward distribution cycle. Rewards are automatically compounded if you leave your stake active. You can view accrued rewards in the Rewards section of your ATOM account.
Managing and Unbonding Your Staked ATOM
If you decide to stop staking, you must unbond your ATOM. This process removes your delegation and initiates a 21-day unbonding period:
- In Ledger Live, go to your ATOM account
- Click Manage under the staking section
- Select Undelegate
- Enter the amount or choose All
- Confirm the transaction on your Ledger device
During the 21-day period, your ATOM are locked and do not earn rewards. After the period ends, funds return to your spendable balance. Note that you cannot cancel an unbonding request.
You can also redelegate your ATOM to a different validator without waiting for the unbonding period:
- Use the Redelegate option in Ledger Live
- Select current and new validators
- Confirm amount and transaction on your Ledger
Redelegation allows you to switch validators while keeping your stake active and earning rewards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still use my ATOM while they are staked? No, staked ATOM are locked for delegation. You cannot send or trade them until you undelegate and complete the 21-day unbonding period.
Are staking rewards automatically claimed?Yes, in Ledger Live, rewards are automatically claimed and compounded if you do not manually claim them. You can choose to claim rewards at any time by clicking Claim Rewards in the staking interface.
What happens if a validator I delegate to gets slashed? If a validator misbehaves (e.g., double-signing), a portion of their staked ATOM — including delegated amounts — may be slashed. The loss is proportional to your delegation. Choosing reliable validators minimizes this risk.
Is there a minimum amount of ATOM required to stake? There is no minimum delegation amount enforced by the Cosmos network, but Ledger Live may require a small amount to cover transaction fees. Always ensure you have extra ATOM for gas.
