How to stake Cosmos (ATOM) on Ledger Nano X?
Set up your Ledger Nano X for Cosmos staking by updating firmware, installing the Cosmos app, and connecting to Keplr to securely delegate ATOM.
Oct 29, 2025 at 11:37 pm
Setting Up Your Ledger Nano X for Cosmos Staking
1. Ensure your Ledger Nano X is updated to the latest firmware version through Ledger Live. An outdated device may not support the latest features required for staking ATOM.
2. Install the Cosmos application directly from Ledger Live. Open the app manager, connect and unlock your device, then locate 'Cosmos' in the list and install it securely.
3. After installation, open the Cosmos app on your Ledger device. The screen should display a symbol confirming the app is active and ready for interaction.
4. Use a trusted wallet interface such as Keplr or Cosmostation that supports Ledger integration. These wallets allow secure connection to your hardware device without exposing private keys.
5. Connect your Ledger to your computer or mobile device and approve the connection request on the Nano X screen when prompted by the wallet interface.
Connecting Keplr Wallet to Ledger Nano X
1. Visit the official Keplr website and install the browser extension or download the mobile app depending on your preferred platform.
2. When setting up Keplr, select the option to use a hardware wallet. Choose Ledger as your provider during the setup flow.
3. Follow the prompts to establish communication between Keplr and your Ledger Nano X. Confirm addresses shown on both the screen and device match exactly before proceeding.
4. Once connected, your ATOM balance will appear in Keplr if you have previously received tokens on the associated address. This confirms successful linkage.
5. Never enter your recovery phrase into any software or website. The entire process should rely solely on physical confirmation via your Ledger device.
Staking ATOM Through Keplr with Ledger
1. In Keplr, navigate to the 'Staking' section where available validators are listed along with their commission rates and uptime statistics.
2. Select a validator you wish to delegate to. Review performance metrics carefully to make an informed decision about reliability and return consistency.
Always verify the validator’s identity and reputation before delegating funds. Missteps can lead to slashing penalties.3. Enter the amount of ATOM you want to stake and confirm the transaction details within Keplr. The request will be sent to your Ledger Nano X for approval.
4. On your Ledger device, review the staking parameters including validator address and amount. Approve only if all data matches your intent.
5. After confirmation, wait for blockchain finality. The transaction status can be tracked in Keplr under activity history or via a Cosmos block explorer like Mintscan.
Managing Rewards and Restaking
1. Over time, staking rewards accumulate in your wallet. These must be manually claimed unless auto-compounding is enabled through certain third-party platforms.
2. In Keplr, go to the staking dashboard and locate pending rewards. Initiate the claim process, which triggers another Ledger-verified transaction.
3. Upon claiming, rewards become liquid and available for transfer, exchange, or restaking to continue earning yield.
Reinvesting rewards increases your effective staked balance, amplifying future returns over time.4. To redelegate or unstake, access the delegation management panel in Keplr. Each action requires explicit authorization via your Ledger Nano X.
5. Unbonding periods on Cosmos last approximately 21 days. During this time, funds are locked and ineligible for rewards or transfers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stake ATOM using Ledger Live instead of Keplr? Ledger Live does not currently support direct staking for Cosmos (ATOM). Users must rely on external wallets like Keplr or Cosmostation that integrate with Ledger devices for staking functionality.
What happens if I lose my Ledger Nano X? As long as you have securely stored your 24-word recovery phrase, you can restore access to your ATOM holdings on another Ledger or compatible wallet device. The assets remain tied to the private keys derived from that phrase.
Are staking rewards automatically compounded? No, Cosmos does not offer native auto-compounding. You must manually claim rewards and reinvest them by delegating again to the same or a different validator.
Is there a minimum amount of ATOM required to stake? There is no protocol-level minimum, but some wallets or validators might impose small thresholds. Practically, even a fraction of an ATOM can be staked, though network fees should be considered.
