How to stake Cosmos (ATOM) on Ledger Nano X? (Passive Income)
To stake ATOM securely with your Ledger Nano X: install the Cosmos app, verify your address, choose a reputable validator, delegate ≥1 ATOM, and claim rewards manually—staking runs on-chain, not the device.
Feb 15, 2026 at 01:20 pm
Setting Up Your Ledger Nano X for ATOM Staking
1. Install the Cosmos app on your Ledger Nano X using Ledger Live desktop or mobile application. Ensure firmware is updated to version 2.0 or higher before proceeding.
2. Connect your Ledger Nano X via USB and open the Cosmos app. Confirm the app is running by checking the screen display showing the Cosmos logo and version number.
3. In Ledger Live, add a new Cosmos account. The interface will automatically detect your device and fetch the associated public address derived from your hardware wallet’s seed phrase.
4. Verify the displayed Cosmos address on both Ledger Live and the device screen. A mismatch indicates potential setup error or compromised firmware.
5. Fund the newly created Cosmos account with ATOM tokens. Send only from trusted exchanges or wallets that support native Cosmos (ATOM) transfers — avoid ERC-20 or other token standards.
Choosing a Validator for Delegation
1. Open the “Stake” section in Ledger Live and select your Cosmos account. The interface lists available validators ranked by uptime, commission rate, and self-bonded stake.
2. Review validator details including commission percentage, current rank, number of delegators, and historical slashing incidents. Validators with zero slashes and >99% uptime are preferred.
3. Avoid validators with unusually low commissions below 5%, as they may lack infrastructure redundancy or long-term operational commitment.
4. Select a validator whose governance participation aligns with your preferences. Some validators actively vote on proposals; others abstain frequently.
5. Confirm the validator identity using its operator address or website domain. Cross-check against official Cosmos validator registries like Mintscan or Big Dipper.
Executing the Delegation Transaction
1. Enter the amount of ATOM you wish to delegate. Minimum delegation is 1 ATOM, but practical staking benefits emerge at amounts above 100 ATOM due to fee structure.
2. Ledger Live displays estimated annual yield based on current network inflation and selected validator commission. This figure updates dynamically and does not guarantee future returns.
3. Approve the transaction on your Ledger Nano X screen. You must physically confirm using both side buttons — no approval occurs without physical interaction.
4. Wait for the transaction to be included in a block. Confirmation typically takes 6–12 seconds under normal network conditions, visible as a green checkmark in Ledger Live.
5. Your delegated balance appears under “Staked” in the account overview. Rewards accrue every block but require manual claiming to compound or withdraw.
Claiming and Managing Staking Rewards
1. Navigate to the Cosmos account in Ledger Live and click “Claim rewards”. This initiates a separate transaction signed by your Ledger device.
2. Claimed rewards are added directly to your spendable balance. They do not auto-redelegate unless manually configured through advanced CLI tools outside Ledger Live.
3. Monitor reward accumulation frequency. Cosmos distributes inflationary rewards approximately every 6 hours, though visible balance updates depend on syncing status.
4. If redelegation is needed — moving stake from one validator to another — initiate a redelegate action. Note this locks funds for 21 days before completion.
5. Unbonding requires initiating a withdrawal request, after which ATOM remains locked for 21 days before appearing in your spendable balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I stake ATOM directly from Ledger Live without installing the Cosmos app?No. The Cosmos app must be installed and open on the device. Ledger Live relies on the hardware wallet’s secure enclave to sign staking transactions.
Q: What happens if my Ledger Nano X battery dies during staking?Nothing. Staking state resides on the Cosmos blockchain, not the device. Your delegation remains active. Restore access using your recovery phrase on any compatible Cosmos wallet.
Q: Does Ledger Live support governance voting for ATOM holders? No. Ledger Live does not currently provide an interface for submitting on-chain governance votes. Voting requires CLI tools like cosmos-sdk or third-party platforms that accept Ledger-signed messages.
Q: Are staking rewards subject to taxation when claimed?Yes. Most jurisdictions treat staking rewards as taxable income upon receipt. Consult local tax regulations before claiming or transferring rewards.
