How to Speed Up a Stuck Bitcoin Transaction in Electrum Using Replace-by-Fee?

Electrum supports Replace-by-Fee (RBF) by default—signaling replaceability via `nSequence < 0xffffffff`—enabling users to bump unconfirmed transaction fees before confirmation, provided the original was RBF-marked at broadcast.

Oct 03, 2026 at 08:00 pm

Understanding Replace-by-Fee in Electrum

1. Replace-by-Fee (RBF) is a Bitcoin protocol feature that allows users to replace an unconfirmed transaction with another one that pays a higher fee.

2. Electrum supports RBF by default for newly created transactions, provided the user has not disabled it in wallet preferences.

3. When enabled, Electrum signals RBF support by setting the nSequence field of inputs to a value less than 0xffffffff.

4. This signaling makes the original transaction replaceable as long as it remains unconfirmed and has not been mined into a block.

5. Nodes and miners that honor RBF policies will accept the replacement if it meets standard relay rules and includes a sufficiently higher fee.

Enabling RBF Before Transaction Broadcast

1. In Electrum, RBF can be toggled before sending by checking or unchecking “Enable Replace-by-Fee” in the Send dialog.

2. The checkbox appears only when the wallet is configured to use SegWit or native SegWit addresses, as legacy address support for RBF is limited in practice.

3. Users must manually adjust the fee slider or enter a custom fee rate to ensure the replacement transaction clears faster.

4. Electrum displays real-time fee estimates pulled from connected servers, helping users choose competitive rates based on current mempool pressure.

5. Once confirmed as replaceable, the transaction ID (TXID) remains mutable until confirmation — meaning the original hash may become invalid after replacement.

Creating a Replacement Transaction

1. Open the History tab and locate the stuck transaction labeled “Unconfirmed”.

2. Right-click the entry and select “Increase fee” to launch the RBF workflow.

3. Electrum automatically reconstructs the transaction using the same inputs and outputs, adjusting only the fee.

4. The interface shows the original fee, the new fee, and the resulting fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB).

5. After signing and broadcasting, the original transaction is effectively invalidated if the replacement gains sufficient fee priority and propagates widely.

Verifying RBF Propagation

1. Monitor the transaction status in the History tab — the original entry changes to “Replaced” once the new TXID appears.

2. Use external block explorers like Mempool.space or Blockstream.info to verify both the original and replacement TXIDs are visible in the mempool.

3. Check whether the replacement transaction has received more ancestor feerate weight than competing transactions.

4. Observe relay behavior: if nodes drop the original but accept the replacement, propagation is successful.

5. Electrum does not guarantee replacement success; network-wide adoption of RBF policy varies across nodes and mining pools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can I use RBF if my original transaction was sent without signaling replaceability?Electrum cannot retroactively enable RBF on a non-signaling transaction. Only transactions explicitly marked replaceable at broadcast time support this mechanism.

Q2: Does RBF work with Lightning Network payments? No. RBF applies exclusively to on-chain Bitcoin transactions. Lightning payments operate off-chain and are settled via commitment transactions governed by separate protocols.

Q3: What happens if both the original and replacement transactions get confirmed? The Bitcoin consensus rules prevent double-spending. Only one version can appear in a block. Miners selecting the higher-fee version ensures the original becomes orphaned.

Q4: Is RBF supported when using hardware wallets with Electrum?Yes, provided the hardware device firmware supports signing RBF-enabled transactions. Ledger and Trezor models released after 2020 generally handle RBF correctly under Electrum’s interface.
