Accessing Your MetaMask Wallet
1. Launch the MetaMask browser extension or mobile application and unlock it using your password or biometric authentication.
2. Ensure your wallet is connected to the correct network—Ethereum Mainnet for standard ERC-20 transfers, or a supported testnet if performing verification steps.
3. Confirm that your wallet contains sufficient ETH to cover gas fees; without ETH, the transaction will fail regardless of token balance.
4. Verify the displayed wallet address matches the one you intend to use—copying an incorrect address may result in irreversible loss.
Adding the ERC-20 Token to MetaMask
1. If the token does not appear automatically in your asset list, click “Import Tokens” at the bottom of the assets panel.
2. Select the “Custom Token” tab and paste the official contract address of the ERC-20 token—this must be obtained from the project’s verified source, not third-party forums or unvetted links.
3. MetaMask will auto-populate symbol and decimals fields; manually verify these values against the token’s official documentation or Etherscan page.
4. Click “Next”, then “Add Token” to finalize the import—no blockchain interaction occurs during this step.
Initiating the Transfer
1. From the assets view, locate the ERC-20 token and click the “Send” button adjacent to its balance.
2. Enter the recipient’s Ethereum address precisely—MetaMask does not validate whether the address belongs to a person, exchange, or smart contract.
3. Input the exact amount of tokens to send; note that decimals are enforced per the token’s specification—sending 1.000000 instead of 1 may trigger rejection on certain dApps.
4. Review the estimated gas fee shown; fluctuations occur based on network congestion, and MetaMask displays low/medium/high options—selecting “Low” may delay confirmation beyond 30 minutes.
Approving and Confirming the Transaction
1. After clicking “Confirm”, MetaMask opens a transaction preview window showing recipient, amount, network fee, and data field status.
2. If this is your first time interacting with the token’s contract, MetaMask may prompt an initial approval transaction—this grants the contract permission to move your tokens and requires a separate gas payment.
3. Check the “To” field: it must display the token’s contract address during approval, not the recipient’s address—confusing these leads to accidental approvals of malicious contracts.
4. Once signed, the transaction hash appears; track it on Etherscan using the same network as your wallet’s active chain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Why does MetaMask ask for two transactions when I only want to send tokens? One transaction approves the token contract to spend your tokens; the second executes the actual transfer. This is inherent to ERC-20 design—not a MetaMask limitation.
Q2: Can I cancel an ERC-20 transaction after clicking “Confirm”?No. Once signed and broadcast, Ethereum transactions are immutable. You can attempt to replace it with a higher-gas transaction to the same nonce, but success is not guaranteed.
Q3: What happens if I send ERC-20 tokens to a non-EVM-compatible wallet address? The tokens become irretrievable. They reside on-chain at that address but cannot be accessed without private key control and compatible signing logic.
Q4: Is it safe to approve unlimited spending for a DeFi protocol? No. Unlimited approvals expose your entire token balance to compromise if the protocol’s contract is exploited or impersonated.
