How to use MetaMask with the X Layer (OKX) network? (L2 Setup)
To use X Layer with MetaMask, add the network (Chain ID 196, RPC: https://xlayer-rpc.okx.com), import OKT via its X Layer contract, bridge assets from Ethereum, and pay gas in OKT.
Feb 24, 2026 at 12:19 am
Adding X Layer Network to MetaMask
1. Open MetaMask extension or mobile app and ensure you are on the main wallet view.2. Click the network selector dropdown, usually located at the top of the interface.3. Select “Custom RPC” or “Add Network” depending on your MetaMask version.4. Enter the official X Layer (OKX) network parameters: Network Name as X Layer, New RPC URL as https://xlayer-rpc.okx.com.5. Set Chain ID to 196, Currency Symbol to OKT, and Block Explorer URL to https://www.oklink.com/xlayer.6. Confirm and save the configuration. The network should now appear in your network list.
Importing OKT Tokens into MetaMask
1. After connecting to X Layer, click the “Import Tokens” button on the Assets tab.2. Switch to the “Custom Token” tab and select “Contract Address”.3. Paste the official OKT token contract address for X Layer: 0x8f7e96d5a54b3a1c6716a0055130b74584611f42.4. MetaMask will auto-populate Token Symbol and Decimals fields—verify they display OKT and 18.5. Click “Next”, then “Add Token” to finalize the import. Your OKT balance will appear once confirmed on-chain.
Transferring Assets from Ethereum Mainnet to X Layer
1. Visit the official OKX X Layer bridge interface at https://bridge.xlayer.io.2. Connect your MetaMask wallet using the “Connect Wallet” button.3. Select Ethereum as the source chain and X Layer as the destination chain.4. Choose the asset to transfer—ETH, USDT, or OKT—and enter the amount.5. Review gas fees and estimated completion time before confirming the transaction on Ethereum.6. Wait for cross-chain confirmation; assets typically arrive on X Layer within 5–15 minutes after finality on Ethereum.
Executing Smart Contract Interactions on X Layer
1. Navigate to a dApp built for X Layer, such as https://swap.xlayer.io or https://lend.xlayer.io.2. Ensure MetaMask is connected and set to the X Layer network.3. Approve token allowances when prompted—confirm each signature request directly in MetaMask.4. Initiate swaps, deposits, or borrows; all transactions execute with lower fees compared to Ethereum L1.5. Monitor pending status via the MetaMask activity feed or by checking the transaction hash on https://www.oklink.com/xlayer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use the same seed phrase for X Layer that I use for Ethereum?A: Yes. X Layer is fully EVM-compatible and derives addresses using the same HD wallet standard. Your existing MetaMask wallet works without re-importing.
Q: Why does my OKT balance show zero even after bridging?A: Verify that MetaMask is set to X Layer—not Ethereum or another network—and that you’ve imported the correct OKT contract address for X Layer, not the mainnet version.
Q: Is it safe to approve unlimited allowances for tokens on X Layer?A: No. Unlimited approvals carry risk. Use tools like https://revoke.cash to reduce or revoke allowances after completing operations.
Q: Do I need native OKT to pay for gas on X Layer?A: Yes. Gas fees on X Layer are denominated in OKT. You must hold OKT in your wallet to sign transactions—even if interacting with wrapped ETH or USDT.
