What happens if you lose your Exodus password?
Exodus doesn’t store your password—recovery relies solely on your secure 12-word phrase; without it, funds are irretrievable, even by Exodus support.

Account Recovery Options
1. Exodus does not store your password on its servers or anywhere else. The password exists solely on your device and serves only to decrypt your local wallet file.
2. If you forget the password, there is no way to retrieve it through Exodus support, email verification, or any centralized recovery mechanism.
3. Your access to funds depends entirely on whether you have backed up your 12-word recovery phrase correctly and securely.
4. Without that phrase, your wallet remains encrypted and inaccessible—no third party, including Exodus developers, can bypass this encryption.
5. Attempting brute-force methods against the encrypted wallet file is computationally infeasible due to AES-256 encryption standards applied by the software.
Recovery Phrase Functionality
1. The 12-word recovery phrase is generated during wallet creation and represents your private keys in human-readable form.
2. It allows full restoration of all assets across any compatible wallet, including Exodus, Trust Wallet, or MetaMask, provided the derivation path matches.
3. This phrase must be written down physically—not saved digitally—and kept away from cameras, cloud storage, or messaging apps.
4. Typing the phrase into a fresh Exodus installation will rebuild the wallet structure and restore control over associated blockchain addresses.
5. Entering even a single word incorrectly—or using a different order—will result in a completely separate wallet with zero balance.
Encrypted Backup File Limitations
1. Exodus offers an optional encrypted backup file feature that stores wallet data in an encrypted format tied to your password.
2. This file cannot be decrypted without the original password, making it useless if the password is lost.
3. Unlike the recovery phrase, the backup file contains no independent cryptographic representation of your keys—it relies entirely on the password for decryption.
4. Users sometimes confuse this file with a recoverable asset; it is not a substitute for the 12-word phrase.
5. Deleting or misplacing the backup file while retaining the recovery phrase causes no loss of access to funds.
Hardware Wallet Integration
1. Connecting a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor to Exodus bypasses reliance on the software password entirely.
2. All signing operations occur on the hardware device, and the private keys never leave its secure chip.
3. In such setups, losing the Exodus password only affects access to the interface—not control over funds—as long as the hardware device remains functional and accessible.
4. Exodus acts merely as a viewer and transaction builder when paired with external hardware signers.
5. Recovery still falls back to the hardware wallet’s own 24-word seed, independent of Exodus credentials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can Exodus engineers reset my password if I contact support? No. Exodus has no access to your password or encrypted wallet data. Support cannot intervene in password recovery.
Q: What if I only remember part of my 12-word phrase?Partial recall offers no practical advantage. Each word must be exact and in correct sequence. There is no partial decryption or guessing mechanism built into BIP-39.
Q: Does reinstalling Exodus help regain access?Reinstallation alone does nothing unless you re-enter the correct password or input the full 12-word recovery phrase during setup.
Q: Is there any log or cache file storing my password locally? No. Exodus deliberately avoids writing passwords to disk, memory dumps, or system logs. The password is held transiently in RAM only during active session use.
