How to change gas fees in MetaMask? (Advanced Settings)
MetaMask lets you manually adjust gas price, limit, and nonce—enabling faster confirmations or cost savings—via Advanced Settings per network.
Mar 29, 2026 at 03:59 am
Accessing Advanced Gas Controls
1. Open the MetaMask extension or mobile app and ensure you are logged into your wallet.
2. Navigate to the account menu, then select Settings from the dropdown or sidebar.
3. Scroll down and tap or click Advanced to reveal deeper configuration options.
4. Toggle on Customize transaction nonce and Advanced gas controls if they are disabled.
5. Return to the main interface and initiate a transaction—such as sending ETH or interacting with a contract—to activate the editable gas fields.
Manual Gas Price Adjustment
1. When confirming a transaction, locate the Gas Fee section before final submission.
2. Click the Edit button next to the displayed fee estimate.
3. Switch from Auto to Advanced mode to expose Gas Price (Gwei) and Gas Limit inputs.
4. Enter a custom value for Gas Price, ensuring it aligns with current network conditions observed on explorers like Etherscan or Blockchair.
5. Avoid setting values below the network’s minimum recommended Gwei, as such transactions may stall indefinitely.
Gas Limit Customization
1. The Gas Limit field defines how many computational units the transaction may consume.
2. For standard ETH transfers, the default limit is 21,000—this value must not be reduced unless the transaction type explicitly supports lower usage.
3. Smart contract interactions often require higher limits; MetaMask may auto-suggest a value based on the contract’s estimated execution cost.
4. Manually increasing the limit beyond the suggestion can prevent out-of-gas failures—but excess unused gas is always refunded.
5. Entering an excessively high limit does not increase fees unless all units are consumed; however, it may trigger wallet-level safety warnings.
Network-Specific Gas Configuration
1. MetaMask allows per-network gas settings—Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, Arbitrum, and others maintain independent fee structures.
2. Go to Settings > Networks, select a specific chain, and choose Configure Network or Edit.
3. Adjust default Default Gas Price and Default Gas Limit fields where supported by the RPC provider.
4. Some L2 networks like Optimism or Base do not expose gas price controls in the same way—fees there are often calculated as a function of L1 data costs plus L2 execution.
5. Confirm changes by saving the network configuration and restarting any active dApp sessions to apply updated parameters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I change gas fees after a transaction is submitted?A: No. Once broadcast to the network, a transaction cannot be modified. You may attempt to replace it using the same nonce with a higher gas price—a process known as speedup or cancel in MetaMask.
Q: Why does MetaMask show “Low”, “Medium”, or “High” instead of exact Gwei values?A: These labels correspond to dynamically calculated fee tiers sourced from third-party APIs like EthGasStation or the node’s own fee estimator. They reflect probabilistic confirmation time ranges—not fixed numbers.
Q: What happens if I set an extremely high gas price?A: Your transaction will likely confirm within the next block, but you risk overpaying significantly—especially during low-congestion periods when base fees drop sharply.
Q: Do gas settings affect token swaps on decentralized exchanges?A: Yes. Swaps trigger contract calls requiring both gas limit and priority fee adjustments. Slippage tolerance and routing logic remain separate, but insufficient gas limits cause outright failure regardless of slippage settings.
