How to Change the Default Solana Account in Phantom Wallet
Phantom Wallet is a non-custodial, multi-chain crypto wallet—born on Solana in 2021—that lets users securely manage SOL, ETH, NFTs, and DeFi positions, with full private-key control and no recovery if the 12-word seed is lost.

Understanding Phantom Wallet Account Structure
1. Phantom Wallet stores multiple Solana keypairs within a single browser extension or mobile application instance.
2. Each keypair corresponds to a unique base58-encoded public address, visible in the wallet’s account list.
3. The default account is the one automatically selected for signing transactions unless explicitly overridden by user action or dApp request.
4. Phantom does not assign priority or hierarchy among accounts; the “default” status is purely UI-driven and session-based.
5. Account order in the dropdown menu reflects creation sequence, but this does not govern default selection logic.
Browser Extension Workflow for Default Account Switching
1. Click the Phantom icon in the browser toolbar to open the popup interface.
2. Locate the active account display at the top — it shows the truncated public key and SOL balance.
3. Click the downward-facing chevron or “Accounts” button beside the displayed address.
4. A scrollable list of all imported or created accounts appears; hover over any entry to reveal a “Set as default” option.
5. Click “Set as default” on the desired account — the UI immediately refreshes, updating the header and transaction preview context.
Mobile App Behavior and Limitations
1. Phantom Mobile displays only one active account per session, with no visible “default” toggle in the main view.
2. To change the active account, users must navigate to Settings → Accounts → select another keypair.
3. The selected account becomes the sole signing identity until manually switched again.
4. No background account persistence occurs across app restarts — the last-used account remains active.
5. QR code scanning and dApp connection requests always originate from the currently selected account, not a hidden default.
Impact on dApp Interactions and Transaction Signing
1. When a dApp calls solana.connect(), Phantom returns the public key of the currently set default account.
2. All subsequent solana.signTransaction() and solana.signAllTransactions() operations use that same account as the fee payer and signature source.
3. If a dApp explicitly requests a specific account via solana.requestAccounts() with an array, Phantom honors the first valid address in that list — overriding the default setting temporarily.
4. Network switching (e.g., from devnet to mainnet) preserves the default account assignment across chains.
5. Imported private keys retain their original derivation path but adopt the current default status upon import confirmation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does changing the default account affect my stored private keys or seed phrase? No. Private keys remain encrypted and unchanged in local storage. Only the UI reference point shifts.
Q: Can I disable the default account behavior entirely? No. Phantom requires exactly one active account at all times. There is no “no default” mode.
Q: Why does my dApp still connect to the old account after I changed the default? This occurs if the dApp has cached the previous public key or maintains a persistent session. Force-refresh the dApp page or clear its local storage to trigger a fresh connection.
Q: Is the default account setting synced across devices? No. Phantom does not synchronize account ordering or default status via cloud backup. Each installation maintains independent state.
