How to Change the Default Network in Coinbase Wallet Before Sending Crypto?
To buy a McLaren NFT, you can pay by card or crypto—but either way, you’ll need a MetaMask wallet to mint it, and must safeguard your seed phrase.

Accessing Network Settings in Coinbase Wallet
1. Open the Coinbase Wallet mobile application or browser extension and authenticate using your passcode, biometrics, or wallet password.
2. Tap or click the profile icon located in the top-right corner of the interface to enter account settings.
3. Select Networks from the dropdown or menu list—this section governs all active blockchain environments available for transactions.
4. Confirm that the desired network is enabled; disabled networks will not appear in the send flow or asset display.
Selecting a Target Blockchain for Transaction Initiation
1. Navigate to the Send screen by tapping the “+” button or selecting “Send” from the home tab.
2. Choose the cryptocurrency you intend to transfer—asset behavior is strictly tied to its native chain, such as ETH on Ethereum or MATIC on Polygon.
3. Before entering an amount or recipient address, locate the network indicator adjacent to the asset symbol—this often appears as a small chain logo or network name next to the balance.
4. Tap the indicator to open a modal listing all compatible networks where that token exists; only networks with sufficient gas tokens and supported contracts will be shown.
Handling Multi-Network Tokens Like USDT or WBTC
1. Tokens like USDT exist across Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Solana, and Tron—each version has distinct contract addresses and interoperability rules.
2. When initiating a transfer, Coinbase Wallet automatically detects the token’s origin chain based on the selected wallet balance—if you hold USDT on Base, the default network will be Base unless manually overridden.
3. To switch, tap the network badge and select another supported environment—but note: sending USDT on Ethereum to an Arbitrum address without bridging first results in permanent loss.
4. A warning banner appears if the recipient address does not match the selected network’s format—Ethereum addresses start with “0x”, Solana with “G…”, and so on.
Gas Token Requirements per Network
1. Each network mandates its own native gas token: ETH for Ethereum, MATIC for Polygon PoS, ARB for Arbitrum, and SOL for Solana.
2. Coinbase Wallet checks wallet balance for the required gas token before allowing transaction confirmation—if insufficient, it blocks the send action and displays a red alert.
3. Users cannot bypass this check by switching networks mid-flow; the gas token must reside on the same chain as the asset being sent.
4. Depositing gas tokens onto alternate chains requires prior bridging via official tools like the Coinbase Bridge or third-party bridges verified by Coinbase Wallet’s security layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I change the default network after confirming a transaction but before broadcasting?A: No. Once the confirmation modal appears and signature initiation begins, the network selection is locked. Cancel and restart the send flow to adjust.
Q: Why does my token balance disappear when I switch networks?A: Balances are chain-specific. Switching from Ethereum to Arbitrum hides Ethereum-based tokens because they are not natively deployed there—only assets bridged or minted on Arbitrum appear.
Q: Does changing the default network affect staking or yield positions?A: Yes. Staked assets and liquidity pool positions are bound to their deployment chain. Switching networks does not migrate those positions—it only changes the context for new operations.
Q: Is it possible to set one network as permanently default for all future sends?A: Not currently. Coinbase Wallet defaults to the network associated with the selected asset’s current balance and does not store persistent user-defined network preferences across sessions.
