How to Cancel a Pending MetaMask Transaction? How to Replace a Stuck Ethereum Transaction?
Ethereum’s nonce ensures transaction order and prevents replay: each account starts at 0, increments per sent tx, and mandates strict sequential processing—enabling cancellation/speed-up via same-nonce, higher-gas replacements.

Understanding the Nonce Mechanism
1. Every Ethereum account maintains a sequential counter called Nonce, starting from zero for the first transaction.
2. Each subsequent transaction must carry a Nonce value exactly one higher than the previous confirmed transaction from that same address.
3. Miners strictly enforce this ordering: if a transaction with Nonce 7 remains unconfirmed, all transactions with Nonce 8 or above will stall indefinitely.
4. A pending transaction cannot be altered once broadcast, but it can be overwritten using an identical Nonce and a higher gas fee.
5. This overwrite behavior is not a feature of MetaMask alone—it is enforced by the Ethereum protocol itself at consensus level.
Canceling via MetaMask’s Built-in Interface
1. Open MetaMask and navigate to the Activity tab to locate the stuck transaction.
2. Click the three-dot menu next to the pending entry and select Cancel.
3. MetaMask automatically constructs a new transaction sending 0 ETH to your own address, reusing the exact same Nonce.
4. The interface pre-fills a significantly increased gas price based on current network conditions to ensure priority inclusion.
5. After signing and broadcasting, the replacement transaction appears in the activity log with status Replaced.
Manual Cancellation Using Custom Nonce
1. Retrieve the stalled transaction’s Nonce by inspecting its details on Etherscan or directly within MetaMask’s transaction popup.
2. Enable Advanced settings in MetaMask and toggle on Customize Transaction Nonce.
3. Initiate a new transfer: set recipient to your own wallet address, amount to 0 ETH, and manually input the previously noted Nonce.
4. Adjust the gas limit to default (21000) and raise the gas price well above the original—typically 2x or more recommended.
5. Confirm the transaction; once mined, the original pending entry disappears from all explorers and wallet interfaces.
Accelerating Instead of Canceling
1. If the goal is execution rather than cancellation, choose Speed Up instead of Cancel in MetaMask’s activity menu.
2. The speed-up function resubmits the identical transaction payload but with a higher gas price and same Nonce.
3. No change is made to recipient, amount, or data field—the only modification is economic incentive for miners.
4. This method preserves transaction intent while resolving congestion-induced latency.
5. It remains effective even when the original gas price was only marginally insufficient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I cancel a transaction after it has one confirmation?A: No. Once included in a block and confirmed—even once—it becomes immutable and irreversible under Ethereum’s consensus rules.
Q: What happens if I set the wrong Nonce during manual replacement?A: The transaction will either fail silently or remain pending indefinitely, depending on whether the specified Nonce is too low or too high relative to your account state.
Q: Does canceling consume gas?A: Yes. Both the original and replacement transactions require gas payment. The canceled transaction’s gas is forfeited; the replacement’s gas is spent upon mining.
Q: Will my wallet display duplicate balances during the replacement process?A: No. Wallets track balance changes based on confirmed state transitions—not pending entries—so no double-counting occurs in displayed ETH balances.
