How to use the bridge feature in MetaMask Portfolio? (Cross-Chain)
MetaMask Portfolio’s bridge feature lets users seamlessly transfer supported tokens across chains like Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Polygon using integrated protocols—no direct smart contract interaction needed.
Mar 10, 2026 at 07:39 am
Understanding the Bridge Feature in MetaMask Portfolio
1. The bridge feature in MetaMask Portfolio enables users to move assets between supported blockchains without leaving the interface.
2. It operates through integrated third-party bridge protocols such as Orbiter Finance, Across, and Synapse, each handling specific chain pairs.
3. Users do not interact directly with smart contracts; instead, the Portfolio UI abstracts routing logic, gas estimation, and token mapping.
4. Supported chains include Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, BSC, and Avalanche—with new additions rolled out via backend configuration updates.
5. Asset bridging is limited to tokens that have verified canonical bridges and on-chain liquidity pools matching the source and destination chains.
Initiating a Cross-Chain Transfer
1. Navigate to the “Assets” tab and select the token you wish to bridge.
2. Click the Bridge button adjacent to the token’s balance display.
3. Choose the destination network from the dropdown—only networks where the token is natively deployed or wrapped will appear.
4. Enter the amount and review the estimated time, fee breakdown (including native gas and bridge protocol fee), and slippage tolerance.
5. Confirm the transaction using your connected wallet; MetaMask will prompt signature requests for both approval and execution steps.
Tracking Bridge Transaction Status
1. After submission, the transaction appears under the “Activity” tab with real-time status: “Pending”, “Relaying”, “Confirmed”, or “Failed”.
2. Each status links to relevant explorers—Etherscan for Ethereum-layer activity, Arbiscan for Arbitrum, etc.—allowing manual verification.
3. Failed bridges display error codes like “INSUFFICIENT_LIQUIDITY” or “TIMEOUT”, which are logged server-side but visible in the activity details.
4. Relayed transactions may take between 2–30 minutes depending on destination chain finality and bridge congestion metrics.
5. No manual claim step is required for most bridges; assets auto-appear in the destination wallet once the relay completes and the destination contract mints the corresponding representation.
Security Considerations and Limitations
1. MetaMask Portfolio does not custody funds during bridging—the user retains full control of private keys at all times.
2. Bridge endpoints are audited by external firms, but historical exploits on underlying protocols remain outside MetaMask’s operational scope.
3. Tokens bridged via unofficial or community-maintained bridges lack support in Portfolio’s balance reconciliation engine and may not reflect accurately.
4. Bridging stablecoins across chains carries counterparty risk tied to the minting/burning mechanism of the target wrapper.
5. Repeated small-value transfers trigger disproportionately high fees due to fixed overhead costs embedded in cross-chain message passing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I bridge NFTs using MetaMask Portfolio?A: No. The bridge feature supports only fungible tokens with verified ERC-20, BEP-20, or equivalent standards. NFT bridging is not implemented.
Q: Why does my token show as “unsupported” when selecting a destination chain?A: The token contract address has no registered mapping on the destination chain, or the bridge protocol lacks liquidity or routing support for that pair.
Q: Do I need separate gas tokens on both source and destination chains?A: Only the source chain requires native gas (e.g., ETH on Ethereum, MATIC on Polygon). The destination chain receives the bridged asset without requiring pre-funded gas.
Q: Is there a minimum or maximum amount I can bridge?A: Minimum amounts vary per bridge—Orbiter enforces 0.001 ETH equivalent, while Across sets dynamic thresholds based on pool depth. Maximums are constrained by available liquidity and protocol-specific caps.
