How to Add a New Ethereum Account in Ledger Live for Managing Multiple Assets?

Ledger Live lets you securely add multiple Ethereum accounts from one 24-word phrase—each with unique derivation paths, local naming, and hardware-confirmed transactions.

Oct 03, 2026 at 08:19 pm

Account Creation Workflow

1. Launch Ledger Live on your desktop or mobile device and ensure your Ledger hardware wallet is connected and unlocked with the correct PIN.

2. Navigate to the Accounts tab and click the + Add account button located in the top-right corner.

3. Select Ethereum from the list of supported cryptocurrencies—Ledger Live will automatically detect whether your device supports Ethereum via its firmware version and app installation status.

4. Confirm the Ethereum app is installed on your Ledger device; if not, Ledger Live will prompt you to install it using the Manager section before proceeding.

5. Once the Ethereum app is active, Ledger Live scans your device for existing Ethereum accounts derived from your 24-word recovery phrase and displays them as numbered entries (e.g., Ethereum #1, Ethereum #2).

Derivation Path Selection

1. Ledger Live defaults to the standard ETH BIP-44 derivation path (m/44'/60'/0'/0), which corresponds to the first Ethereum account generated from your seed.

2. To add a second or third Ethereum account, manually trigger derivation by clicking Advanced options, then selecting Derive new account under the same network.

3. Each new account uses an incremented external chain index: Ethereum #2 maps to m/44'/60'/0'/1, Ethereum #3 to m/44'/60'/0'/2, and so on—no additional backup is required since all are recoverable from the original 24 words.

4. The interface shows the public address, balance, and recent transaction history for each derived account immediately after confirmation on the device screen.

5. You may assign custom names like “Staking ETH”, “DAO Treasury”, or “NFT Purchase” to distinguish purposes—these labels are stored locally and do not affect on-chain data.

Transaction Signing Protocol

1. When sending ETH or ERC-20 tokens from any added account, Ledger Live constructs the unsigned transaction and transmits it to the device via USB or Bluetooth.

2. Your Ledger device renders full transaction details—including recipient address, amount, gas fee, and smart contract interaction flags—on its secure display.

3. You must physically confirm each field using the side buttons: left/right to navigate, both buttons to approve. No action occurs without explicit tactile verification.

4. If the transaction involves a known token contract, Ledger Live overlays the official token name and symbol fetched from its internal registry, reducing risk of spoofed addresses.

5. After approval, the signed payload returns to Ledger Live, which broadcasts it to the Ethereum network through its integrated node infrastructure or your custom RPC endpoint.

Multi-Account Security Boundaries

1. All Ethereum accounts share the same root entropy but operate as isolated signing contexts—the private key for Ethereum #1 cannot sign for Ethereum #2 without re-derivation.

2. Ledger’s Secure Element enforces strict memory isolation: even during concurrent app usage, cryptographic operations for one account never expose material related to another.

3. Each account maintains independent nonce tracking within Ledger Live’s local database, preventing replay or sequence errors when managing parallel activities across wallets.

4. Exporting account-specific public keys is permitted, yet exporting private keys remains technically impossible—even via debug interfaces or firmware extraction attempts.

5. Firmware updates preserve all derived accounts; no resynchronization or manual re-import is necessary after upgrading Nano S Plus, Nano X, Flex, or Stax devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I add an Ethereum account that was originally created in MetaMask?A: No. Ledger Live only manages accounts derived from your Ledger device’s 24-word recovery phrase. Importing external private keys or keystores is intentionally disabled for security reasons.

Q: Why does Ledger Live show fewer Ethereum accounts than my Trezor does?A: Ledger Live limits automatic scanning to the first 5 accounts per derivation path by default. You can manually derive more using Advanced options, whereas other tools may scan deeper without user confirmation.

Q: Is it safe to use the same Ledger device for Ethereum mainnet and testnets like Sepolia?A: Yes. Testnet accounts follow separate derivation paths (e.g., m/44'/1'/0'/0 for Ethereum Classic or m/44'/1'/0'/0 for Sepolia) and are cryptographically segregated from mainnet keys.

Q: Do I need separate 24-word phrases for each Ethereum account?A: No. A single 24-word recovery phrase generates infinite accounts across chains and paths. Writing down or storing multiple phrases increases compromise risk and contradicts Ledger’s security model.
