What is HiveOS or SimpleMining OS? How to Use Them to Manage Your Rigs Easily?
HiveOS is a cloud-managed, Linux-based mining OS with remote web control, GPU-specific overclocking, scripting hooks, and multi-pool support—unlike local-only SimpleMining OS.
Dec 17, 2025 at 12:20 pm
What Is HiveOS?
1. HiveOS is a Linux-based operating system specifically designed for cryptocurrency mining rigs.
2. It runs directly on bare metal and replaces traditional OS installations like Windows or generic Linux distributions.
3. The interface is accessed remotely via a web dashboard, eliminating the need for physical monitor or keyboard attachments to each rig.
4. HiveOS supports over 50 GPU models across AMD and NVIDIA families, including legacy cards and newer architectures like RDNA3 and Ada Lovelace.
5. It integrates with major mining pools and offers built-in support for algorithms such as Ethash, KawPow, Autolykos, and Cuckoo variants.
What Is SimpleMining OS?
1. SimpleMining OS is another lightweight, purpose-built mining OS focused on stability and ease of deployment.
2. It boots from USB flash drives and loads entirely into RAM, reducing wear on storage media and improving boot speed.
3. Its configuration is managed through a local web UI accessible at a fixed IP address assigned via DHCP or static assignment.
4. It includes pre-tuned profiles for popular miners like T-Rex, GMiner, and NBMiner, allowing rapid switching between coins and algorithms.
5. Unlike HiveOS, it does not require cloud registration — all management remains fully local unless optional telemetry is enabled.
Core Differences Between HiveOS and SimpleMining OS
1. HiveOS relies on a centralized cloud backend for fleet monitoring, remote updates, and alerting, while SimpleMining OS operates without mandatory internet connectivity.
2. HiveOS provides granular per-rig overclocking profiles tied to specific GPUs, whereas SimpleMining OS applies global settings across all detected devices by default.
3. HiveOS allows scripting via Bash and Python hooks triggered by events like miner restarts or temperature thresholds; SimpleMining OS uses JSON-based config overrides only.
4. HiveOS supports multi-pool failover with automatic wallet detection and fee calculation; SimpleMining OS requires manual pool configuration per coin.
5. HiveOS includes an integrated SSH terminal accessible through the web UI; SimpleMining OS exposes SSH only if explicitly enabled in advanced settings.
How to Deploy HiveOS on a Mining Rig
1. Download the latest HiveOS image from the official site and write it to a USB drive using BalenaEtcher or Rufus.
2. Insert the USB into the target rig, power on, and enter BIOS to set USB as primary boot device.
3. After boot, the rig obtains an IP via DHCP and registers automatically with the HiveOS cloud platform upon internet connection.
4. Log into hiveos.farm using your credentials and locate the newly added rig under the “Fleet” tab.
5. Assign a worker name, configure mining profile, apply OC settings, and enable auto-start — the rig begins hashing within seconds.
How to Deploy SimpleMining OS on a Mining Rig
1. Obtain the latest SimpleMining OS ISO from simplesystems.io and create a bootable USB using Ventoy or Etcher.
2. Boot the rig from USB and wait for the initialization screen showing local IP and login credentials.
3. Open a browser and navigate to the displayed IP address to access the local web console.
4. Go to “Miners” → “Add Miner”, select algorithm and pool, then paste wallet address and worker name.
5. Save configuration, reboot, and verify hash rate and uptime metrics appear under the “Dashboard” section.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can HiveOS run without internet access?Yes, but with limitations — offline mode disables remote monitoring, OTA updates, and cloud-based profile syncing. Local CLI access remains functional.
Q: Does SimpleMining OS support dual-mining setups? It supports concurrent miners only if manually configured via custom scripts; no native dual-mining UI or auto-balancing logic is included.
Q: Are both OSes compatible with ASIC miners? No. Both HiveOS and SimpleMining OS are GPU-only platforms. They do not recognize or manage ASIC hardware like Antminers or Whatsminers.
Q: Can I switch from HiveOS to SimpleMining OS without reinstalling hardware?Yes. Simply replace the boot USB drive and reconfigure network and mining parameters — no changes to GPUs, PSU, or motherboard are required.
