How to add and customize indicators on the Coinbase Advanced chart?
On Coinbase Advanced, apply indicators like RSI or MACD via the chart toolbar, customize parameters in real time, toggle visibility, adjust colors and opacity—but presets and Pine Script aren’t supported.
Jan 24, 2026 at 07:59 am
Accessing the Chart Interface
1. Log into your Coinbase Advanced account and navigate to the trading dashboard.
2. Select a specific trading pair such as BTC/USD or ETH/USD from the market list.
3. Click on the chart area to ensure it is active and responsive to toolbar interactions.
4. Locate the indicator icon—typically represented by a line graph symbol—on the top toolbar of the chart panel.
5. Click the icon to open the indicator dropdown menu containing over thirty built-in technical tools.
Selecting and Applying Indicators
1. Scroll through the alphabetical list or use the search bar to locate indicators like RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, or Moving Averages.
2. Click on the desired indicator name to apply it instantly to the price chart.
3. Each applied indicator appears in its default configuration with auto-generated colors and parameters.
4. Multiple indicators can be layered simultaneously; the chart engine automatically adjusts scaling and layout to preserve readability.
5. Indicator names appear in the legend at the top-right corner, allowing quick identification and toggling visibility.
Adjusting Indicator Parameters
1. Hover over an indicator’s name in the legend and click the gear icon that appears beside it.
2. A modal window opens displaying editable fields such as period length, source price (e.g., close, open, high), and signal line settings.
3. Modify values directly—for example, change the RSI period from 14 to 7 for increased sensitivity—or adjust Bollinger Band standard deviation from 2.0 to 1.5.
4. Press Enter or click “Apply” to confirm changes; the chart updates in real time without reloading.
5. Custom parameter sets are saved per chart instance but do not persist across different trading pairs unless manually reapplied.
Managing Indicator Visibility and Layout
1. Toggle individual indicators on or off using the eye icon next to each entry in the legend.
2. Drag and drop indicator names within the legend to reorder their visual stacking priority on the chart.
3. Right-click any indicator line on the chart to open a context menu offering options like “Remove”, “Edit Settings”, or “Copy Value”.
4. Adjust transparency via the opacity slider located in the indicator settings modal to reduce visual clutter when overlapping multiple studies.
5. Indicator colors can be changed freely by clicking the color swatch beside each parameter field—this supports accessibility and personal workflow preferences.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I save a custom indicator configuration as a preset?A: No. Coinbase Advanced does not support saving user-defined indicator presets. Each adjustment must be reconfigured manually per chart session.
Q: Do indicators update in real time during live trading?A: Yes. All indicators recalculate continuously using live tick data and reflect current market conditions without delay.
Q: Why does the volume indicator sometimes appear disconnected from price action?A: Volume is plotted on a separate axis beneath the main chart by design. Its scale is independent and auto-adjusts based on recent volume magnitude—not price movement.
Q: Is it possible to add custom Pine Script indicators?A: No. Coinbase Advanced only supports native indicators developed and maintained by Coinbase. Third-party scripting languages including Pine Script are not supported.
