How to View Your Average Purchase Cost for Bitcoin on Coinbase
Coinbase’s average buy price for Bitcoin reflects only fiat-based purchases—calculated as total USD spent divided by total BTC acquired—excluding sales, fees paid in BTC, and external transfers.

Accessing Your Transaction History
1. Log into your Coinbase account using verified credentials and two-factor authentication.
2. Navigate to the Portfolio tab located in the main navigation bar.
3. Select Bitcoin (BTC) from your asset list to open its dedicated view.
4. Click the Transactions subtab beneath the BTC balance summary.
5. Ensure all transaction types—buys, sells, deposits, withdrawals, and conversions—are visible by toggling filters appropriately.
Locating the Average Buy Price Metric
1. Scroll past individual transaction entries until you reach the Summary section at the top of the Transactions page.
2. Identify the line labeled Average buy price, displayed alongside fiat currency denomination (e.g., USD).
3. This value reflects only executed purchase orders—not sales, staking rewards, or airdrops—calculated as total fiat spent divided by total BTC acquired.
4. The figure updates automatically after each new buy transaction settles on-chain or clears internal settlement queues.
5. If no purchases exist, the field displays – instead of a numeric value.
Understanding Calculation Methodology
1. Coinbase computes average cost using a simple arithmetic mean: sum of all USD amounts spent on BTC purchases divided by sum of all BTC units acquired.
2. It excludes fees from the numerator unless those fees were paid in fiat and directly attached to the buy order.
3. Transactions made via recurring buys, instant exchanges, or card-based purchases are all included if they result in net BTC inflow.
4. Off-platform transfers—such as BTC sent from external wallets—are not factored into this metric, even if they constitute the majority of your holdings.
5. The system does not apply FIFO, LIFO, or weighted average cost basis methods used for tax reporting; it is strictly an acquisition-weighted average.
Exporting Data for External Validation
1. Click the Export transactions button located above the transaction table.
2. Select date range covering all relevant buy activity and choose CSV format.
3. Open the downloaded file in a spreadsheet application and filter rows where Type equals Buy.
4. Sum the Amount Sold (USD) column and divide by sum of Amount Bought (BTC) column to cross-verify Coinbase’s displayed average.
5. Discrepancies may arise from pending transactions, failed orders, or rounding applied during real-time display rendering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does the average buy price include network fees paid in BTC?No. Only fiat-denominated purchase amounts and corresponding BTC quantities are used. BTC-paid fees do not affect this calculation.
Q: Why does my average buy price differ from my tax lot cost basis?Tax reporting requires tracking individual lots with timestamps, fees, and acquisition method—unlike Coinbase’s simplified aggregate metric.
Q: Can I view average buy price for multiple cryptocurrencies simultaneously? No. The metric is asset-specific and only appears on the detail page of each cryptocurrency, not in consolidated portfolio views.
Q: Is the average buy price adjusted when I sell part of my Bitcoin holdings? No. Selling activity has no impact on the displayed average buy price, which remains anchored solely to historical buy events.
