How to Set a Trailing Stop on Bybit?
A trailing stop dynamically adjusts with favorable price moves, maintaining a set distance—e.g., $300 or 1.2%—and triggers a market/limit order if price reverses to that level.

Understanding Trailing Stop Mechanics
1. A trailing stop is a dynamic order type that adjusts automatically as the market price moves in a favorable direction.
2. Unlike a fixed stop-loss, it maintains a user-defined distance—measured in price or percentage—from the current market price.
3. When the market reverses and hits the trailing distance, the order triggers as a market or limit order based on user configuration.
4. On Bybit, this feature applies to both perpetual and inverse futures contracts but not to spot trading.
5. The trailing activation price must be set at a level that is logically reachable given current bid-ask spread and volatility conditions.
Navigating the Bybit Trading Interface
1. Log into your Bybit account and select the desired trading pair under the Derivatives tab.
2. Ensure you are in the “Contract” section—not “Spot”—and choose either USDT or USDⓈ-margined perpetuals.
3. Locate the order entry panel on the right side of the chart interface.
4. Click the dropdown menu labeled “Order Type” and select “Trailing Stop.”
5. Input the position size, leverage, and trigger conditions before submitting.
Configuring Trailing Parameters
1. Set the “Trailing Distance” as either a fixed value (e.g., $50) or a percentage (e.g., 1.2%).
2. Define the “Activation Price” manually if required—this is the price level at which the trailing logic begins tracking.
3. Choose between “Market” or “Limit” execution mode for the triggered order; limit orders require specifying a take-profit or stop-limit price.
4. Confirm margin mode: isolated or cross—trailing stops behave differently depending on margin allocation rules.
5. Review the estimated liquidation price impact; aggressive trailing distances may unintentionally accelerate liquidation risk during sharp reversals.
Common Execution Scenarios
1. In a long position, if BTC/USDT rises from $61,200 to $62,800, a $300 trailing distance keeps the stop level at $62,500.
2. If price then drops to $62,500, the trailing stop activates and submits a market sell order instantly.
3. During low-liquidity periods, slippage may cause execution significantly away from the intended stop level.
4. If multiple trailing stops are active across different contracts, each operates independently with no inter-contract synchronization.
5. Partial fills do not reset the trailing logic—the stop continues tracking from the last updated price level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I modify a trailing stop after placement?Yes. You can adjust the trailing distance and activation price via the “Active Orders” tab, provided the order has not yet been triggered.
Q: Does Bybit support trailing stops on testnet?Yes. Trailing stop functionality is fully replicated on Bybit’s demo trading environment with identical parameters and behavior.
Q: Why does my trailing stop show “Inactive” status? This occurs when the current market price has not yet reached the configured activation price—or when the position size is zero due to prior partial closure.
Q: Is trailing stop available for options trading on Bybit? No. Trailing stop orders are currently unsupported for Bybit’s options product suite.
