How to Set a Coinbase Advanced Limit Order That Remains Open Until Filled?
On Coinbase Advanced, GTC limit orders let you buy/sell crypto at a set price, persisting until filled or canceled—no fees, no expiration, and they survive app restarts.

Understanding Limit Orders on Coinbase Advanced
1. A limit order on Coinbase Advanced specifies the exact price at which a user intends to buy or sell a cryptocurrency.
2. Unlike market orders, limit orders do not execute immediately unless the market reaches the defined price level.
3. The platform allows users to choose from multiple time-in-force options, including Good-Til-Canceled (GTC), Immediate-Or-Cancel (IOC), and Fill-Or-Kill (FOK).
4. GTC is the only option that ensures the order remains active until manually canceled or fully executed.
5. This behavior applies uniformly across all supported trading pairs, including BTC/USD, ETH/USD, and SOL/USD.
Navigating the Advanced Trade Interface
1. Log in to your Coinbase account and switch to the Advanced Trade tab using the navigation bar at the top.
2. Select the desired trading pair from the dropdown menu located above the order book.
3. Click the “Limit” tab beneath the price chart to activate limit order mode.
4. Input the target price in the “Price” field using either the keyboard or the price ladder on the right side of the interface.
5. Enter the quantity in the “Amount” field, ensuring it complies with minimum order size requirements for that asset.
Selecting and Confirming Time-in-Force
1. Locate the “Time in Force” dropdown menu, typically found below the “Amount” field.
2. Choose “Good-Til-Canceled (GTC)” from the list — this selection guarantees persistence across trading sessions.
3. Review the estimated fee displayed next to the “Place Order” button; fees vary based on maker/taker status and account tier.
4. Click “Buy” or “Sell”, depending on direction, to submit the order to the matching engine.
5. Once confirmed, the order appears under “Open Orders” in the Orders panel, displaying status, price, remaining size, and age.
Monitoring and Managing Active Orders
1. Open orders remain visible in real time within the Orders section, updated without requiring manual refresh.
2. Partial fills trigger immediate updates: remaining size decreases, and a new entry appears in the “Order History” tab.
3. Users may cancel any open GTC order at any time by clicking the “Cancel” button adjacent to the order row.
4. No automatic expiration occurs unless triggered by a system-wide maintenance event or regulatory intervention affecting order continuity.
5. Historical data for completed and canceled orders is retained for 90 days and accessible via the “Order History” filter controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does a GTC limit order survive a Coinbase app restart or browser session timeout?Yes. GTC orders are stored server-side and persist independently of client-side activity.
Q: Can I modify the price or size of an existing GTC limit order? No. Modification is not supported. You must cancel the original and place a new order.
Q: Are GTC orders subject to overnight funding or interest charges? No. Coinbase Advanced does not apply holding costs or financing fees to unfilled limit orders.
Q: What happens to a GTC order during a hard fork or network upgrade affecting the base asset? The order remains active unless the asset is delisted or trading is suspended, in which case it is automatically canceled with full refund.
