How to sell NFTs on the Coinbase marketplace?
The Coinbase NFT marketplace lets users buy, sell, and discover Ethereum-based NFTs using compatible wallets like Coinbase Wallet or MetaMask.
Aug 13, 2025 at 11:35 am
Understanding the Coinbase NFT Marketplace
The Coinbase NFT marketplace is a decentralized platform that allows users to buy, sell, and discover non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Unlike traditional exchanges, this marketplace operates using blockchain technology, primarily on the Ethereum network, and supports wallets compatible with ERC-721 and ERC-1155 token standards. Before selling NFTs, users must understand that the platform is peer-to-peer, meaning creators and collectors interact directly without intermediary approval for listings.
To access the marketplace, navigate to nft.coinbase.com and connect a supported wallet. The primary wallet integrated with the platform is the Coinbase Wallet, though MetaMask and other EVM-compatible wallets are also supported. It is essential to ensure your wallet contains the NFT you intend to sell and has sufficient Ethereum (ETH) for gas fees during transaction execution.
Preparing Your NFT for Sale
Before listing an NFT, verify ownership and transferability. Log into your wallet and confirm the NFT appears in your collectibles or assets section. If the NFT is stored in a different wallet, transfer it to the wallet you plan to connect with Coinbase NFT. This transfer requires a gas fee paid in ETH.
Ensure the NFT metadata is accurate, including name, description, image, and attributes. Some NFTs may have unlockable content—such as private links or digital files—attached. Confirm this content is correctly set, as buyers may request access post-purchase. If the NFT was minted on a different platform, double-check royalty settings, though Coinbase currently does not enforce creator royalties by default.
Connecting Your Wallet to Coinbase NFT
Visit nft.coinbase.com and click the 'Connect Wallet' button located in the top-right corner. Choose your preferred wallet provider—options include Coinbase Wallet, MetaMask, WalletConnect, and others. Follow the prompts to authenticate the connection. For Coinbase Wallet app users, scanning the QR code is the fastest method.
Once connected, your profile picture or wallet address will appear in the upper right. Click on it to access your collection dashboard. Here, you can view all NFTs associated with the connected wallet. If the NFT you want to sell does not appear, ensure it is on the Ethereum mainnet and not on a Layer 2 network unless explicitly supported.
Creating a Listing for Your NFT
Navigate to your profile and locate the NFT you wish to sell. Click on the item to open its detail page. Look for the 'Sell' button, typically located beneath the NFT image or in the options menu. Clicking this opens the listing interface.
In the listing form:
- Select the sale type: either fixed price or timed auction.
- For fixed price, enter the desired ETH amount. The interface will display an approximate USD value based on current exchange rates.
- For timed auction, set a starting bid and duration (options usually range from 1 to 7 days).
- Choose the payout wallet—this is where proceeds will be sent upon sale. It can be your connected wallet or another verified address.
- Review the fees: Coinbase charges a 2.5% service fee on successful sales. No upfront listing fee is required.
After filling in the details, click 'Review Listing' to preview the sale terms. Confirm all information is correct before proceeding.
Signing the Listing Transaction
Once you confirm the listing, your wallet will prompt you to sign a transaction. This step does not immediately incur a gas fee, as Coinbase uses lazy minting—the NFT is not transferred to a marketplace contract until a buyer purchases it.
Approve the signature request in your wallet. The process may take a few seconds to complete. After signing, the listing will appear on the marketplace under your profile and in search results. The NFT remains in your wallet until sold.
If you decide to cancel the listing later, you can do so from your profile page by accessing the NFT’s options. Cancellation does not require a blockchain transaction and is free of charge.
Managing Offers and Finalizing the Sale
For fixed-price listings, the sale completes automatically when a buyer sends the exact ETH amount. The funds are transferred to your designated payout wallet, minus the 2.5% fee. The NFT ownership updates on the blockchain, and the buyer receives it in their wallet.
For timed auctions, bidders place offers in ETH. You can view active bids in the NFT’s detail page. At the end of the auction period, the highest bidder wins. You must manually accept the winning bid to finalize the sale, which triggers a blockchain transaction.
If you receive an offer below your asking price, you can choose to accept, counter, or decline it. Counteroffers allow you to propose a different price. All negotiations occur on-chain, and each response requires a wallet signature.
After a successful sale, a transaction receipt is available in your wallet history. The NFT disappears from your collection and appears in the buyer’s wallet. Ensure your wallet remains connected to receive notifications about the transaction status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I list NFTs from other blockchains on Coinbase NFT?Currently, the Coinbase NFT marketplace primarily supports Ethereum-based NFTs. While future updates may include support for networks like Base or Polygon, only NFTs on the Ethereum mainnet can be listed at this time. Check the official Coinbase NFT help center for updates on multi-chain support.
What happens if my NFT doesn’t sell?Unsold NFTs remain in your wallet. You can edit the price, switch between auction and fixed-price modes, or cancel the listing at any time. There is no penalty or fee for delisting. You retain full ownership until a successful sale occurs.
Do I need to pay gas fees to list an NFT?No. Coinbase uses lazy minting, meaning no gas fee is required to create a listing. Gas fees are only incurred when a buyer purchases the NFT, and those costs are typically borne by the buyer. However, if you transfer the NFT to another wallet before sale, that transfer will require gas.
How long does it take for a sold NFT to reflect in the buyer’s wallet?Once the sale is confirmed on the Ethereum blockchain, the transfer is nearly instantaneous. Most buyers see the NFT in their wallet within seconds to a minute. Network congestion may delay confirmation, but the transaction status can be tracked using a blockchain explorer like Etherscan.
