How to sell Ethereum (ETH) on MetaMask? (Portfolio swap guide)
To swap ETH in MetaMask, go to Portfolio → ETH card → Swap, choose a token, set amount/slippage, review fees and routes, then confirm with gas adjustment and authentication.
Feb 14, 2026 at 10:40 am
Accessing the Portfolio Interface
1. Open the MetaMask browser extension or mobile application and ensure you are logged into your wallet.
2. Confirm that your Ethereum mainnet network is selected—this is essential for ETH transactions to execute correctly.
3. Navigate to the Portfolio tab, which displays all your token balances including ETH, ERC-20 tokens, and NFTs.
4. Locate the ETH balance card and tap or click on it to view detailed asset information and available actions.
5. Select the Swap option directly from the ETH card interface—this initiates the built-in decentralized exchange routing engine.
Setting Up the Swap Parameters
1. In the swap interface, ETH appears automatically in the “From” field as the source asset.
2. Choose the desired output token in the “To” field—options include stablecoins like USDC or DAI, BTC via wrapped bridges, or other ERC-20 assets supported by integrated aggregators.
3. Enter the exact amount of ETH you wish to sell; MetaMask instantly calculates estimated output based on real-time liquidity across multiple DEXs.
4. Review slippage tolerance settings—default is 0.5%, but users may adjust between 0.1% and 10% depending on token volatility and trade size.
5. Toggle “Expert Mode” if you require advanced controls such as custom RPC endpoints or gas price overrides—this is recommended only for experienced users.
Reviewing Transaction Details
1. MetaMask displays a breakdown of fees: network gas cost denominated in ETH, and potential protocol fees if routing through third-party AMMs like Uniswap or SushiSwap.
2. The preview shows minimum received amount after slippage, transaction deadline (usually 20 minutes), and the specific pool or route used for execution.
3. A warning banner appears if the selected output token has low liquidity, high price impact, or known security concerns flagged by MetaMask’s token detection system.
4. You can compare quotes by tapping “View Quotes” to see alternative routes with varying gas costs and output amounts.
5. Verify the recipient address shown is your own wallet—MetaMask does not redirect funds externally unless manually configured via custom contract interaction.
Confirming and Executing the Swap
1. Click or tap “Confirm Swap” to proceed—this opens the transaction signature request modal.
2. MetaMask displays gas estimation again, along with a dynamic gas price slider allowing manual adjustment between slow/average/fast tiers.
3. Approve the transaction using your wallet password or biometric authentication—no private keys are exposed during this step.
4. Once signed, the transaction broadcasts to the Ethereum network; status updates appear in real time within the activity feed.
5. After block confirmation—typically within 15–30 seconds on current network conditions—the swapped tokens reflect in your portfolio balance immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I swap ETH for fiat currency directly inside MetaMask?A: No. MetaMask does not support direct on-ramp or off-ramp to bank accounts or credit cards. Users must first swap ETH for a stablecoin, then use an external exchange or payment processor to convert to fiat.
Q: Why does my ETH swap show zero output even though I entered a valid amount?A: This usually occurs when slippage tolerance is too low for the selected pair or when the output token lacks sufficient liquidity on connected DEXs. Increasing slippage or choosing a more liquid token resolves the issue.
Q: Is it safe to approve unlimited token allowances during swaps?A: MetaMask no longer requests unlimited allowances by default. It uses permit2 or EIP-2612 signatures where possible, limiting approvals to exact swap amounts. Always verify allowance values before signing.
Q: What happens if my swap fails after confirmation?A: Failed swaps consume gas but do not transfer assets. The ETH remains in your wallet. Check Etherscan for the transaction hash to diagnose reasons such as out-of-gas, price movement beyond slippage, or insufficient balance.
