How Does OKX Perpetual Swap Funding Fee Work?
OKX calculates funding every 8 hours using a robust index (5+ exchanges, volume-weighted, outlier-filtered) and mark price (60% index + 40% trade avg), capped at ±1.50% to align perpetuals with spot—settled automatically in USDT.
Jul 30, 2026 at 12:45 pm
Funding Fee Mechanism Overview
1. The funding fee is a periodic payment exchanged between long and short positions in perpetual swap contracts to anchor the contract price to the underlying spot index.
2. OKX calculates funding every 8 hours at 00:00, 08:00, and 16:00 UTC, based on the mark price and the index price derived from multiple spot exchanges.
3. Funding rate is determined by two components: the interest rate differential and the premium index, both expressed in annualized terms.
4. When the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts; when negative, shorts pay longs — ensuring continuous alignment with spot valuation.
5. OKX enforces a ±1.50% cap on funding rate for most perpetual swaps, including PUMPUSDT and TRXUSD X-Perps, preventing extreme volatility-induced imbalances.
Index Price Construction
1. OKX constructs its index price using real-time weighted average prices from at least five major spot exchanges, including Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, OKX Spot, and Bitstamp.
2. Each exchange’s contribution is weighted by its 24-hour USD trading volume, excluding outliers and exchanges with insufficient liquidity or regulatory clarity.
3. The index undergoes outlier filtering: prices deviating more than 5% from the median are discarded before final averaging.
4. For TRXUSD X-Perps, the index includes only EEA-compliant venues that meet MiFID II reporting standards, reinforcing regulatory integrity in pricing.
5. No single exchange accounts for more than 30% of the final index weight, mitigating manipulation risk from concentrated liquidity sources.
Mark Price Calculation
1. OKX’s mark price incorporates both the index price and a moving average of recent trade prices to dampen short-term spikes.
2. A 1-minute time-weighted average of trades contributes 40%, while the index price contributes 60% — balancing responsiveness and stability.
3. The mark price also integrates order book depth data: if bid-ask spread exceeds 0.5% of mid-price, additional smoothing is applied to prevent front-running exploitation.
4. For contracts like PUMPUSDT, where liquidity is concentrated on fewer venues, the mark price applies tighter spread thresholds and higher weighting to verified on-chain DEX liquidity feeds.
5. All mark price inputs are timestamped, cryptographically signed, and stored immutably on X Layer for auditability and dispute resolution.
Execution and Settlement
1. Funding is settled in USDT or the quote currency of the contract, directly credited or debited from users’ margin balances without requiring manual action.
2. Positions opened less than 15 minutes before a funding timestamp are excluded from that cycle’s calculation to prevent gaming via rapid entry/exit.
3. Users holding positions across multiple contracts — such as TRXUSD X-Perps and PUMPUSDT — experience independent funding calculations per instrument, with no cross-margin offsetting.
4. Negative funding events do not trigger liquidation; OKX adjusts margin balance but maintains position status unless maintenance margin falls below threshold.
5. Historical funding data, including timestamps, rates, and direction, is publicly accessible via OKX’s API v5 under /api/v5/public/funding-rate, enabling third-party analytics and strategy backtesting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is funding fee taxable income or expense under EU VAT rules?Under EU VAT Directive 2006/112/EC, funding payments are treated as non-taxable financial services, provided they occur within MiFID-regulated venues like OKX Europe.
Q2: Can I avoid funding fees by closing positions before settlement time?Yes — positions closed at least 15 minutes prior to any funding timestamp incur zero funding liability for that cycle, as confirmed in OKX’s Terms of Service Section 7.3.2.
Q3: Does OKX adjust funding rate during flash crashes? No — OKX does not retroactively modify published funding rates, even during extreme volatility; however, its index construction filters outliers in real time to suppress distortion.
Q4: Are funding payments visible in transaction history immediately after settlement?Yes — all funding transfers appear in account transaction history within 3 seconds of settlement timestamp, labeled as “Funding” with precise rate and direction indicators.
