How to Use Leverage on Binance Futures? Beginner Risk Guide
Binance Futures leverage lets you control larger positions with less capital—e.g., 10x means $100 margin controls $1,000—but higher leverage increases liquidation risk and requires careful margin mode selection.

Understanding Leverage Mechanics
1. Leverage on Binance Futures allows traders to control larger position sizes with a fraction of the required capital. A 10x leverage means $100 of margin controls a $1,000 position.
2. The leverage setting is applied per trading pair and remains active until manually changed. It does not auto-adjust based on market conditions or account equity.
3. Different contracts impose distinct maximum leverage limits—BTCUSDT permits up to 125x, while low-liquidity altcoin pairs may cap at 20x or lower.
4. Leverage is configured before opening a position. Changing it mid-trade requires closing and reopening the position, which incurs additional fees and slippage risk.
5. Binance displays real-time estimated liquidation price and margin ratio immediately after leverage selection, enabling instant risk assessment.
Leverage Configuration Workflow
1. Navigate to the Futures trading interface and select either USDT-Margined or COIN-Margined contracts.
2. Click the leverage value displayed near the order entry panel—this opens a dropdown or numeric input field.
3. Choose from preset options (e.g., 1x, 5x, 10x, 20x) or enter a custom value within allowed boundaries.
4. Confirm the change by clicking “Confirm” or pressing Enter. The system applies the new setting instantly without requiring re-authentication.
5. Verify the updated leverage appears in the position summary panel and reflects correctly in the margin calculation preview.
Liquidation Risk Calculation
1. For long positions, liquidation price = entry price × (1 − 1 / leverage). At 50x leverage and $60,000 entry, liquidation occurs near $58,800.
2. For short positions, liquidation price = entry price × (1 + 1 / leverage). With same parameters, liquidation triggers around $61,200.
3. Mark price—not last traded price—is used for liquidation determination. It aggregates data from multiple exchanges to prevent manipulation.
4. Maintenance margin rate defaults to 0.5% for most USDT perpetuals. If account equity falls below this threshold relative to position value, liquidation initiates.
5. Real-time maintenance margin ratio is visible under the “Positions” tab. Values below 110% trigger warning banners; values below 100% activate forced liquidation.
Position Mode Selection
1. Toggle between isolated margin and cross margin using the mode switch located above the order book.
2. Isolated margin allocates dedicated margin per position. Losses cannot exceed that allocated amount, limiting contagion across trades.
3. Cross margin pools all available wallet balance as collateral. A single losing trade may draw from funds earmarked for other positions.
4. In isolated mode, leverage settings apply individually per open position. In cross mode, leverage is uniform across all concurrent positions.
5. Isolated margin supports independent stop-loss and take-profit levels per trade. Cross margin enforces global risk parameters affecting all holdings.
Common Questions & Direct Answers
Q: Can I change leverage while a position is open?Yes, but only in isolated margin mode. Adjusting leverage in cross margin requires closing the existing position first.
Q: Does higher leverage increase funding rate costs? No. Funding rates are determined by the interest rate differential between long and short positions, not leverage level.
Q: Why does my liquidation price shift even when price is stable?Mark price updates continuously based on external exchange feeds. Minor divergences between exchanges cause recalculations of liquidation thresholds.
Q: Is there a minimum balance required to use 100x leverage?Binance imposes no fixed minimum balance. However, accounts with less than 0.01 BTC equivalent in equity cannot enable leverage above 75x due to internal risk policy enforcement.
