How to change your legal name on Coinbase? (Identity settings)
To change your legal name on Coinbase, go to Settings > Identity, click Edit next to your name, upload valid ID and official name-change documents, then wait 3–5 days for review.
Mar 18, 2026 at 06:00 am
Accessing Identity Settings on Coinbase
1. Log in to your Coinbase account using your verified credentials and two-factor authentication method.
2. Navigate to the Settings section by clicking the user icon in the top-right corner of the dashboard.
3. Select Identity from the left-hand navigation menu—this is where all personal identification data is managed.
4. Confirm that your current identity documents are still valid and have not expired, as outdated verification may block name change requests.
5. Ensure your account is fully verified at the highest level (e.g., IDV or KYC Level 3), since name modifications require full compliance status.
Submitting a Legal Name Change Request
1. Within the Identity tab, locate and click the Edit button next to your displayed legal name.
2. Enter your new legal name exactly as it appears on your updated government-issued ID—no abbreviations or nicknames permitted.
3. Upload a clear, color photo or scanned copy of your official name change document: this could be a court order, marriage certificate, naturalization certificate, or updated passport.
4. Re-upload a current, unexpired government ID showing the new name—driver’s license, national ID card, or passport accepted.
5. Submit the request and wait for Coinbase’s compliance team to review; processing typically takes 3–5 business days.
Verification and Document Requirements
1. All submitted documents must be legible, complete, and free of glare, shadows, or cropped edges.
2. The name on the supporting legal document must match the requested name change without variance in spelling, spacing, or capitalization.
3. Documents issued outside the United States must include an official English translation certified by a licensed translator or embassy.
4. Coinbase does not accept affidavits, notarized letters, or school or employer-issued name change confirmations.
5. If your uploaded files are rejected, you will receive an email notification specifying the exact reason—resubmit only after correcting the stated issue.
Account Restrictions During Review
1. While your name change request is under review, certain features may be temporarily limited—including withdrawals, deposits, and advanced trading tools.
2. You will retain access to view balances, transaction history, and portfolio analytics during the verification window.
3. Attempting to create a new account to bypass the process violates Coinbase’s Terms of Service and may trigger permanent account suspension.
4. Two-step verification remains active and mandatory—you cannot disable it during this period.
5. If your request is denied, you may appeal within 14 days by replying directly to the rejection email with additional evidence or clarification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I change my name if my account is flagged for suspicious activity?A: No. Accounts under security review or flagged for compliance concerns must resolve those issues before submitting any identity updates.
Q: Does changing my legal name affect my wallet addresses or stored assets?A: No. Your cryptocurrency wallet addresses, private keys, and on-chain holdings remain unchanged and fully accessible after the update.
Q: What happens to my tax reporting documents if I change my name mid-year?A: Coinbase will issue corrected Form 1099s or equivalent regional tax forms reflecting the updated legal name once the change is finalized and verified.
Q: Can I update only my first name or last name independently?A: Yes. You may submit a partial name change—as long as the modification is legally documented and verifiable through official records.
