How to Calculate Kraken Futures Contract Fees?

Kraken Futures charges dynamic taker/maker fees based on 30-day USD notional volume, with rebates for high-volume liquidity providers—no token discounts or margin-mode differences.

Fee Structure Overview

1. Kraken Futures charges two distinct fee types: taker fees and maker fees. Taker fees apply when an order is immediately matched and executed against existing orders in the order book. Maker fees apply when an order adds liquidity by resting on the order book without immediate execution.

2. Fee tiers are determined by a user’s 30-day trading volume denominated in USD, measured across all Kraken Futures contracts. Volume is calculated using the notional value of executed trades, not the number of contracts or base asset quantity.

3. The platform applies fee rates dynamically per trade based on the user’s current tier at the time of execution. No retroactive adjustments occur if volume thresholds change mid-month.

4. Negative maker fees—also known as rebates—are available for high-volume traders. These rebates incentivize liquidity provision and are expressed as positive percentages subtracted from the trade value.

Contract-Specific Fee Application

1. All perpetual and quarterly futures contracts on Kraken Futures use the same fee schedule. There is no differentiation between BTC/USD, ETH/USD, SOL/USD, or any other underlying asset pair.

2. Fees are always calculated in the settlement currency of the contract. For example, BTC/USD contracts incur fees in USD; XRP/USD contracts also settle and charge fees in USD.

3. Cross-margin and isolated-margin positions are subject to identical fee structures. Margin mode does not influence fee rate assignment.

4. Funding payments, which occur every eight hours for perpetual contracts, are separate from trading fees and do not affect fee tier calculations.

Fee Calculation Mechanics

1. The formula for fee amount is: Fee = Notional Value × Applicable Fee Rate. Notional value equals the contract price multiplied by the position size in contracts, then multiplied by the contract multiplier (e.g., $10 for BTC/USD).

2. For a long position of 5 contracts in BTC/USD at $62,400 with a $10 multiplier, the notional value is 5 × $62,400 × $10 = $3,120,000. At a taker fee rate of 0.02%, the fee is $624.00.

3. Fee amounts are rounded to the nearest cent for USD-denominated fees and to the eighth decimal place for crypto-denominated settlements, though Kraken Futures currently only settles fees in fiat for most instruments.

4. Fees are deducted instantly upon trade execution and reflected in the user’s wallet balance and trade history without delay.

Volume Tier Determination

1. Kraken aggregates all executed futures trades—including both opening and closing orders—within the past 30 calendar days to compute tier eligibility.

2. Trades executed via API, Web UI, or mobile app contribute equally to volume. Cancelled orders, rejected orders, or post-only violations do not count toward volume.

3. Users can view their current tier and real-time 30-day volume in the “Account” → “Fees” section of the Kraken Futures interface.

4. Tier changes take effect immediately after crossing a volume threshold. No manual action or verification is required to upgrade or downgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are fees applied on both entry and exit trades?A: Yes. Every executed futures trade—whether opening a new position or closing an existing one—is subject to the applicable taker or maker fee.

Q: Do stop-market or stop-limit orders trigger fees before activation?A: No. Fees are only charged upon actual execution. A stop order sitting idle in the system incurs zero fees until it becomes a market or limit order and matches.

Q: Can I see the exact fee amount before confirming a trade?A: Yes. The Kraken Futures trading interface displays the estimated fee in real time below the order form, updated dynamically as price and size change.

Q: Are there fee discounts for holding KRAKEN tokens?A: No. Kraken Futures does not offer token-based fee reductions. Fee tiers are volume-driven only, with no utility token incentive layer integrated into the futures fee model.
