How to get API keys from your Upbit account?

After generating your Upbit API key, immediately secure the secret key—once lost, it can't be recovered and must be regenerated.

Sep 13, 2025 at 05:00 am

Accessing Your Upbit Account Dashboard

1. Navigate to the official Upbit website and log in using your registered email and password. Ensure that two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled for added security before proceeding.

2. Once logged in, locate the user profile or account settings icon, typically found in the top-right corner of the dashboard interface.

3. Click on “API Management” or a similarly labeled section within the security or account settings menu. This area controls all API-related configurations for your account.

4. Confirm your identity through 2FA when prompted. Upbit requires this step to prevent unauthorized access during sensitive operations like generating API keys.

Creating a New API Key

1. In the API management panel, select the option to create a new API key. You may be asked to provide a label or name for the key to help identify its purpose later.

2. Configure permission settings carefully. Choose whether the key will have read-only access, trading permissions, or withdrawal capabilities. Avoid granting withdrawal rights unless absolutely necessary, as this poses significant security risks.

3. Bind the API key to specific IP addresses if possible. This restriction ensures that requests made with the key are only accepted from trusted locations, reducing the chance of misuse.

4. After finalizing the settings, click “Generate” or “Create.” The system will produce both an API Key (public identifier) and a Secret Key (private authentication string).

5. Immediately save both credentials in a secure location. The Secret Key will not be shown again after you leave the page, so missing it means regenerating the entire key pair.

Securing and Managing API Credentials

1. Never share your API Secret Key with anyone or store it in plaintext files accessible over the internet. Use encrypted vaults or hardware security modules for storage.

2. Regularly audit active API keys through the Upbit dashboard. Disable or delete any keys that are no longer in use or associated with terminated applications.

3. Monitor login and API usage logs provided by Upbit. Unusual activity patterns could indicate compromise, prompting immediate revocation of affected keys.

4. Rotate API keys periodically, especially those with broad permissions. Generating fresh keys reduces exposure time in case of unnoticed breaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover my Upbit API Secret Key if I lose it? No, once generated, the Secret Key is only displayed once during creation. If lost, you must generate a new API key pair and update all services using the old credentials.

Why does Upbit require IP whitelisting for API access? IP whitelisting enhances security by restricting API calls to predefined network addresses. Even if a key is compromised, attackers cannot use it from unauthorized locations.

What permissions should I grant to a bot using my Upbit API? For automated trading bots, assign only trading and read permissions. Withdrawal rights should remain disabled unless the bot explicitly requires fund transfers, which is rare and risky.

Is it safe to use Upbit API keys with third-party platforms? Only use API keys with reputable, well-reviewed platforms. Always limit permissions and enable IP restrictions. Treat every external integration as a potential vulnerability point.
