how to calculate etf fees

To determine the daily fees you'll incur when investing in an ETF, multiply the expense ratio by your investment amount and divide the annual fees by the number of trading days, then multiply by the number of units you own.

  1. Check the Fund Overview:
    • Visit the fund's webpage or prospectus to find the "Expense Ratio" section.
  2. Understand the Expense Ratio:
    • The expense ratio is a percentage that represents the annual operating costs of the ETF, including management fees, administration costs, and marketing expenses.
  3. Calculate Annual Fees:
    • Multiply the expense ratio by your investment amount. For example, if the expense ratio is 0.2% (0.002) and you invest $10,000, your annual fees will be $10,000 x 0.002 = $20.
  4. Divide by Number of Days:
    • ETFs trade throughout the day, so the fees are incurred on a daily basis. Divide the annual fees by the number of trading days in a year (approximately 252). For the above example, this would be $20 / 252 = $0.0794.
  5. Calculate Daily Fees:
    • Multiply the daily fee amount by the number of units you own in the ETF. For example, if you own 100 units, your daily fees would be $0.0794 x 100 = $7.94.
  6. Consider Other Expenses:
    • Besides the expense ratio, ETFs may also have transaction costs (e.g., trading commissions) or redemption fees when you sell your units. Factor these costs into your calculations.
Example:

Let's say you invest $10,000 in an ETF with an expense ratio of 0.3% (0.003).

  • Using the steps above, your annual fees would be $10,000 x 0.003 = $30.
  • Divided by 252 trading days, the daily fee would be $30 / 252 = $0.1190.
  • Assuming you own 100 units, your daily fees would be $0.1190 x 100 = $11.90.

It's important to note that ETF fees can vary significantly, so it's crucial to compare costs and choose an ETF with fees that align with your investment goals.
