How to use Uniswap to trade tokens? (DEX tutorial)
To swap tokens on Uniswap, connect your wallet (e.g., MetaMask), select “From” and “To” tokens, set slippage and deadline, approve if needed, then confirm the swap—ensuring you’re on the correct network.
Jan 10, 2026 at 03:00 pm
Connecting Your Wallet to Uniswap
1. Visit app.uniswap.org using a desktop browser or open the Uniswap mobile app.
2. Click the “Connect Wallet” button located in the top right corner of the interface.
3. Select your preferred wallet provider—MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet, or WalletConnect are widely supported.
4. Approve the connection request in your wallet extension or mobile application.
5. Confirm that your wallet address and network (Ethereum Mainnet, Arbitrum, Base, or Polygon) appear correctly in the top bar.
Selecting Tokens and Setting Trade Parameters
1. Click the “Select a token” field under the “From” section to choose the token you wish to sell.
2. Search for the token by name, symbol, or paste its contract address if it’s not listed in the default token list.
3. Enter the amount you want to trade in the input field; the interface will instantly display the estimated output.
4. Click the “Select a token” field under the “To” section to choose the token you wish to receive.
5. Toggle between “Slippage Tolerance” and “Transaction Deadline” settings to adjust sensitivity to price movement and execution time limits.
Understanding Liquidity Pools and Price Impact
1. Uniswap relies on automated market makers (AMMs), where trades occur against liquidity pools rather than order books.
2. Each pool consists of two tokens with a constant product formula: x × y = k, ensuring continuous pricing.
3. Large trades relative to pool size cause noticeable price impact, which appears as a percentage value below the output field.
4. The interface highlights high price impact in red text, warning users before confirming.
5. Pools with deeper liquidity—measured in total value locked (TVL)—typically offer tighter spreads and lower slippage.
Approving and Executing the Transaction
1. If trading a token for the first time from your wallet, you must approve the Uniswap router to spend that token on your behalf.
2. This approval is a separate Ethereum transaction requiring gas fees and confirmation in your wallet.
3. After approval, click “Swap” to initiate the trade—your wallet will prompt a second transaction signature.
4. The transaction includes details like input amount, output amount, estimated gas fee, and slippage tolerance.
5. Once confirmed on-chain, the swap executes atomically, and updated balances reflect immediately in your wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why does my transaction keep failing?A: Failed transactions often result from insufficient ETH for gas, incorrect slippage settings, or outdated token allowances. Check pending transactions in your wallet and ensure you’re on the correct network.
Q: Can I trade tokens not listed on Uniswap’s default token list?A: Yes. You can manually add any ERC-20 or EVM-compatible token by pasting its verified contract address into the token selector field.
Q: What happens if I set slippage too low during high volatility?A: The transaction may revert if the market price moves beyond your specified slippage threshold before block confirmation, causing loss of gas without trade execution.
Q: Is Uniswap safe to use with large amounts?A: Uniswap’s core smart contracts have undergone multiple audits and operate permissionlessly. However, risks include impermanent loss for LPs, front-running via public mempools, and potential vulnerabilities in newly deployed tokens.
