Can Secret (SCRT) coins be mined?
Secret Network's Proof-of-Useful-Work consensus mechanism employs computations instead of mining, promoting energy efficiency, enhanced security, and increased accessibility for validators.

Can Secret (SCRT) Coins Be Mined?
Secret Network, the privacy-centric blockchain platform underpinning the SCRT coin, employs a unique consensus mechanism known as Proof-of-Useful-Work (PoUW) instead of traditional mining. In this mechanism, validators compete to add new blocks to the blockchain by executing useful computations that contribute to the network's security and overall functionality.
Key Differences Between Mining and PoUW
- Energy Consumption: Traditional mining, employed by proof-of-work (PoW) blockchains like Bitcoin, involves solving complex mathematical puzzles that require specialized hardware and consume vast amounts of energy. PoUW, on the other hand, focuses on executing useful computations, such as data encryption and privacy-preserving operations, which are inherently less energy-intensive.
- Hardware Requirements: Mining cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin necessitates expensive and specialized mining equipment, often referred to as ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits). PoUW, however, does not require dedicated hardware and can be performed on standard computers, making it more accessible to a broader range of participants.
- Block Production Speed: In traditional mining, the time required to produce new blocks is typically fixed and relatively short, leading to frequent block production. PoUW, on the other hand, allows for variable block production times, adapting to network conditions and the availability of useful computations. This flexibility ensures that the network remains secure even during periods of low computational activity.
Benefits of PoUW Over Mining
- Enhanced Security: PoUW introduces an additional layer of security to the Secret Network because validators must perform useful computations to add blocks to the blockchain. This process requires significant computational power, making it more challenging for malicious actors to attack the network.
- Energy Efficiency: By eliminating the need for energy-intensive mining, PoUW significantly reduces the environmental impact of the Secret Network. This aligns with the growing concerns regarding the sustainability of proof-of-work mining and its impact on global energy consumption.
- Increased Accessibility: The absence of specialized hardware requirements makes it easier for individuals and organizations to participate in the Secret Network as validators. This promotes a more decentralized and inclusive network, enhancing its resilience and reliability.
Role of SCRT Coins in PoUW
While SCRT coins cannot be mined in the traditional sense, they play a crucial role in the PoUW consensus mechanism:
- Validator Rewards: SCRT coins serve as rewards for validators who successfully execute useful computations and add new blocks to the blockchain. This incentivizes participation and ensures the network's security and stability.
- Governance: SCRT coin holders have governance rights and can participate in decision-making processes related to the Secret Network's development and future direction. This ensures that the network remains responsive to the needs of its community.
- Transaction Fees: SCRT coins are used to pay transaction fees on the Secret Network. These fees support the network's operation and incentivize validators to process and validate transactions efficiently.
