How did Nervos Network (CKB) come about?
Nervos Network (CKB) emerged as a response to the scalability, interoperability, and security challenges faced by existing blockchain platforms in 2018, driven by a team of blockchain enthusiasts seeking to innovate and improve upon the limitations of the time.

Nervos Network (CKB) is a decentralized public blockchain protocol focused on providing a scalable, secure, and interoperable platform for building decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. Launched in 2018, Nervos has emerged as a leading player in the blockchain ecosystem, offering unique solutions to some of the fundamental challenges faced by the industry, including scalability, interoperability, and security.
Inception and GenesisThe journey of Nervos Network began with a group of blockchain enthusiasts and researchers who recognized the limitations of existing blockchain platforms in terms of scalability, security, and interoperability. Led by Yanbo Li, an accomplished computer scientist and blockchain pioneer, the team set out to develop a new blockchain protocol that could address these challenges and provide a solid foundation for the next generation of decentralized applications.
Key Challenges and SolutionsThe development of Nervos Network was driven by a deep understanding of the key challenges facing the blockchain industry at that time. The team identified three primary areas where existing platforms fell short:
- Scalability: Blockchains faced scalability limitations due to their inability to process a high volume of transactions quickly and efficiently, leading to network congestion and long transaction confirmation times.
- Interoperability: Most blockchains operated independently, with limited support for cross-chain communication and asset transfer. This hindered the development of multi-chain applications and the seamless exchange of value between different networks.
- Security: Blockchains were vulnerable to security threats, such as double-spending attacks and transaction malleability, which could compromise the safety and integrity of the network.
To address these challenges, the Nervos ecosystem was built upon several core principles:
- Common Knowledge Base (CKB): The heart of the Nervos protocol, CKB is a modular blockchain architecture that enables scalability, flexibility, and future-proof development of the network.
- Layering and Interoperability: Nervos adopted a layered architecture to separate different functions and enable interoperability. This allows for the development of custom layers for specific applications, promoting flexibility and extensibility.
- Security and Transparency: Nervos implemented a novel consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Work (PoW) + Proof-of-Stake (PoS), combining the security of PoW with the efficiency of PoS to ensure the reliability and integrity of the network.
Since its inception, Nervos Network has undergone numerous phases of development and upgrades to enhance its capabilities and meet the evolving demands of the blockchain industry. The protocol has gained significant traction and support within the blockchain community, attracting a dedicated group of developers and users who contribute to its growth and adoption.
Community and PartnershipsNervos Network actively nurtures a vibrant and inclusive community of developers, researchers, and enthusiasts. The project has established partnerships with other leading blockchain platforms, research institutions, and industry organizations to promote collaboration and drive blockchain innovation forward.
