How to understand and manage my maintenance margin ratio on Binance Futures?
The maintenance margin ratio—calculated as (Account Equity ÷ Maintenance Margin) × 100%—dynamically measures buffer coverage against liquidation; it updates in real time with mark price and PnL, dropping below 100% triggers Binance’s auto-liquidation.

What Is the Maintenance Margin Ratio?
1. The maintenance margin ratio is a real-time percentage metric that reflects how well your account equity covers the minimum required margin for open positions.
2. It is calculated as Maintenance Margin Ratio = (Account Equity ÷ Maintenance Margin) × 100%, where maintenance margin equals position notional value multiplied by the exchange’s preset maintenance margin rate.
3. This ratio is not static—it shifts with every tick in the mark price and every change in unrealized PnL.
4. When this ratio drops below the platform-defined threshold, Binance triggers automatic liquidation to prevent negative equity.
5. Unlike initial margin, which is fixed at entry, maintenance margin rate acts as a dynamic safety net calibrated per contract type and leverage tier.
How Binance Calculates It Per Contract
1. Binance determines maintenance margin based on contract notional value: Notional Value = Mark Price × Contract Quantity × Contract Multiplier.
2. Each BTCUSDT perpetual contract at 20x leverage carries a published maintenance margin rate of 0.5%, while ETHUSDT at 50x uses 1.2%.
3. For a 0.2 BTC long at $61,400 mark price, notional value is $12,280; maintenance margin becomes $12,280 × 0.5% = $61.40.
4. If account equity stands at $78.90, the current maintenance margin ratio is $78.90 ÷ $61.40 × 100% ≈ 128.5%.
5. A reading above 100% indicates buffer remains; falling below 100% means liquidation is imminent unless equity rises or position shrinks.
Where to Locate and Monitor This Metric
1. In the Binance Futures interface, the maintenance margin ratio appears under “Margin Ratio” in the position panel—not to be confused with “Liquidation Price” or “ROI”.
2. The value updates every 30 seconds using the latest mark price from Binance’s index feed, which aggregates data from multiple spot exchanges.
3. A green upward arrow beside the number signals improving health; a red downward arrow warns of deteriorating coverage.
4. When the ratio falls within 5% of the threshold, a yellow banner appears stating “Risk of Liquidation” without blocking further actions.
5. At or below the exact threshold, the field flashes red and disables all order types except reduce-only and close-position commands.
Common Misconceptions About Margin Health
1. Some traders assume maintenance margin ratio equals leverage—it does not. Leverage is a multiplier applied at entry; maintenance margin ratio is an outcome driven by price action and equity movement.
2. Others believe adding more margin resets the ratio from scratch—it only increases equity, not the denominator. The maintenance margin itself remains tied to current notional value.
3. A high ratio does not guarantee immunity from liquidation during extreme slippage, especially during flash crashes where mark price diverges sharply from index price.
4. Cross-margin mode does not eliminate maintenance margin requirements—it pools equity across all positions, meaning one losing trade can drag down the ratio for all others.
5. Using isolated margin isolates risk per position but still enforces the same formula—only the equity base is restricted to that specific position’s collateral.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Does Binance use wallet balance or equity to compute the maintenance margin ratio? It uses account equity, defined as wallet balance plus unrealized PnL minus any pending fees or funding payments.
Q2: Why does my maintenance margin ratio drop even when price hasn’t moved?Funding rate settlement occurs every 8 hours—if you hold a long position during positive funding, your equity decreases slightly, lowering the ratio without price change.
Q3: Can I see historical values of my maintenance margin ratio? No. Binance does not log or display historical margin ratio data. Only real-time snapshot values are visible in the UI or via WebSocket stream !forceOrder and ACCOUNT_UPDATE events.
Q4: Is the maintenance margin rate the same for USDT-margined and COIN-margined contracts? No. COIN-margined contracts like BTCUSD use a different calculation framework—their maintenance margin is expressed in the base asset and recalculated using BTC-denominated notional value and BTC-based equity.
