Understanding ETH Futures Mechanics
1. ETH futures contracts on Binance represent agreements to buy or sell Ethereum at a predetermined price and date in the future.
2. These instruments operate independently of spot ETH holdings, meaning no actual ETH is transferred upon opening a position.
3. The contract value is denominated in USDT or BTC depending on the contract type—USDT-Margined or COIN-Margined.
4. Funding rates are exchanged every eight hours between long and short positions to anchor the futures price close to the underlying spot index.
5. Mark price—not last traded price—is used to calculate unrealized PnL and determine liquidation levels, preventing manipulation during volatile spikes.
Funding Account Preparation
1. Users must transfer assets from their spot wallet into the USDⓈ-M Futures or COIN-M Futures wallet via the “Transfer” function.
2. Only supported stablecoins like USDT or native coins like ETH can serve as margin depending on the selected contract type.
3. Minimum balance requirements apply: $10 for USDT-M futures, 0.002 ETH for COIN-M futures.
4. Margin mode must be set explicitly—either isolated or cross—each carrying distinct risk parameters and liquidation logic.
5. Leverage settings are adjustable per position but capped at 125x for experienced users; default limits for new accounts remain at 20x.
Placing an ETH Futures Order
1. Navigate to the Binance Futures interface and select either ETH/USDT or ETH/BTC market based on preferred settlement currency.
2. Choose order type: market, limit, stop-market, stop-limit, trailing-stop, or take-profit.
3. Input size in contracts or base asset units—each ETH/USDT perpetual contract represents 1 ETH.
4. Confirm leverage level before submission; changes post-order require manual adjustment through position editing.
5. After execution, the position appears under “Positions” tab with real-time PnL, margin ratio, and estimated liquidation price.
Risk Management Tools
1. Automatic liquidation triggers when maintenance margin falls below threshold—typically 0.5% for USDT-M contracts.
2. Users may set conditional orders such as stop-loss or take-profit directly tied to mark price movement.
3. Partial close functionality allows reducing exposure without fully exiting the trade.
4. Position mode toggle enables switching between one-way and hedge modes for multi-directional strategy deployment.
5. Portfolio margin mode integrates multiple positions across symbols to optimize collateral usage, available only to qualified accounts.
Common Questions & Answers
Q1: Can I hold ETH futures positions indefinitely?Yes, perpetual contracts have no expiry date, but funding payments occur every eight hours and impact net returns.
Q2: What happens if my position gets liquidated? The system closes the position automatically at the bankruptcy price, and any remaining margin is forfeited after fees and insurance fund deductions.
Q3: Is it possible to withdraw margin while a position is open? No, active positions lock required margin; only excess margin above maintenance level can be withdrawn using the “Reduce-Only” function.
Q4: Why does my unrealized PnL fluctuate even when price stays flat?Funding rate accruals and mark price adjustments based on index composition cause continuous PnL recalculations independent of last trade activity.
