What is a "nonce" and how do I reset it in MetaMask to fix transaction issues?
Ethereum’s nonce ensures transaction order and prevents replay attacks; MetaMask tracks it locally but may desync—resetting the account or verifying via Etherscan restores accuracy.

Understanding the Role of Nonce in Ethereum Transactions
1. A nonce is a numerical value attached to each Ethereum transaction sent from a specific wallet address. It starts at zero for the first transaction and increments by one with every subsequent transaction.
2. The nonce ensures that transactions are processed in the correct order and prevents replay attacks. Nodes on the Ethereum network reject transactions with nonces that do not match the expected next value.
3. If a transaction remains pending for an extended period, or gets dropped due to low gas fees, the associated nonce becomes “stuck.” Subsequent transactions using higher nonces will stall until the lower-nonce transaction confirms or is replaced.
4. MetaMask internally tracks the local nonce based on its own record of submitted transactions. This local count may diverge from the network’s actual state if transactions fail silently or are manually dropped outside the interface.
How MetaMask Manages Nonce Internally
1. MetaMask fetches the current account nonce from connected nodes—typically via Infura, Alchemy, or a custom RPC endpoint—when initializing or refreshing the wallet view.
2. When users submit a transaction, MetaMask calculates the next available nonce by adding one to the last known confirmed transaction count from that address.
3. If a user cancels a transaction within MetaMask before broadcast, the tool does not automatically decrement the stored nonce. That value remains locked unless manually adjusted.
4. Users who send raw transactions via scripts or third-party tools without informing MetaMask will cause a mismatch between MetaMask’s internal nonce and the blockchain’s authoritative count.
Steps to Reset the Nonce in MetaMask
1. Open MetaMask and click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the extension popup.
2. Select Settings, then navigate to the Advanced section.
3. Toggle on Reset Account. This action clears locally cached transaction history and forces MetaMask to re-synchronize the latest nonce from the network during the next page load.
4. After resetting, reload any dApp tab where you intend to transact. MetaMask will query the node again and retrieve the accurate pending and confirmed transaction count for your address.
5. Avoid using the “Custom nonce” field unless absolutely necessary. Entering an incorrect value there can lead to rejected transactions or further nonce misalignment.
Alternative Methods When Reset Account Fails
1. Switch to a different Ethereum network within MetaMask—such as toggling from Mainnet to Sepolia and back—to trigger a full state refresh of account data.
2. Manually verify your current nonce using Etherscan: paste your wallet address into etherscan.io, go to the Transactions tab, and count all successful and pending entries. The next expected nonce equals that total.
3. Use a block explorer API like eth.getBlockByNumber or eth.getTransactionCount via curl or web3.js to fetch the exact nonce directly from a node endpoint.
4. As a last resort, export your seed phrase, uninstall MetaMask, reinstall it, and restore the wallet—this guarantees a clean slate but requires careful handling of credentials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does resetting my account in MetaMask delete my private keys?A: No. Resetting only clears local transaction cache and UI state. Your private keys remain secured in the encrypted vault tied to your password or hardware wallet connection.
Q: Can I change the nonce of an already broadcasted transaction?A: Not directly. You can replace a pending transaction by sending a new one with the same nonce and higher gas price—a process known as “speeding up” or “canceling” depending on whether value is set to zero.
Q: Why does my nonce show as higher than the number of transactions I’ve sent?A: Internal wallet operations such as token approvals, contract deployments, or failed transactions still consume nonces—even if they never reach finality on-chain.
Q: Is it safe to use the “Custom nonce” field for consecutive transactions?A: Only if you fully understand the current state of your address on-chain. Misaligned manual entries often result in dropped or rejected transactions without clear error messaging.
