How to Navigate the Futures Trading Interface for Absolute Beginners?
The platform features real-time charts, depth-based order books, and integrated risk tools—key for managing leveraged futures with mark price, funding rates, and dynamic liquidation levels.
Feb 08, 2026 at 03:20 am
Understanding the Core Layout
1. The main screen displays real-time price charts, order book depth, and recent trade history side by side. Traders see bid and ask levels stacked vertically, with volume indicators next to each price level.
2. A persistent toolbar sits at the top, housing tabs for spot, futures, options, and margin trading. Futures traders must select the correct contract type—either perpetual or quarterly—before proceeding.
3. Below the chart, a dedicated panel shows open positions, active orders, and position history. Each entry includes entry price, size, leverage, unrealized PnL, and liquidation price.
4. The bottom section contains the order entry zone: price input field, quantity selector, leverage slider, and execution buttons for market, limit, stop-market, and stop-limit orders.
Decoding Key Terminology
1. Mark Price is not the last traded price—it’s a composite value derived from index prices and funding rates, used to calculate liquidation and prevent manipulation.
2. Funding Rate is a periodic payment exchanged between longs and shorts every eight hours, tied directly to the spread between perpetual contract price and underlying index.
3. Liquidation Price represents the price at which a position is forcibly closed due to insufficient margin; it shifts dynamically as position size, leverage, and wallet balance change.
4. Initial Margin refers to the minimum collateral required to open a leveraged position, while Maintenance Margin is the lower threshold that triggers liquidation if breached.
Placing Your First Order
1. Select a futures pair such as BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT from the symbol dropdown menu located above the chart.
2. Choose leverage using the slider—beginners should start with 2x or 5x to limit exposure to rapid margin erosion.
3. Input desired quantity in contracts or base asset units, then enter limit price or click “Market” to execute instantly at best available rate.
4. Review the estimated margin requirement and liquidation price shown before confirming. A red warning appears if liquidation price falls within current market range.
5. Click “Buy” or “Sell” to submit. The order appears under “Open Orders” until filled, partially filled, or canceled.
Risk Management Essentials
1. Always set a stop-loss order immediately after opening a position—even if placed manually minutes later—to cap potential losses before emotion interferes.
2. Avoid over-leveraging during high-volatility events like Bitcoin halving announcements or major exchange outages, where slippage can exceed 5% in milliseconds.
3. Monitor your wallet’s total margin balance across all positions—not just per-trade equity—since cross-margin mode aggregates risk system-wide.
4. Disable auto-deleveraging alerts only after fully understanding how the platform prioritizes liquidations based on profitability and leverage ratios.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What happens if my position gets liquidated?A: The exchange closes your position at the bankruptcy price, absorbs remaining margin, and charges an insurance fund fee. Any negative balance beyond initial margin may be covered by the platform’s insurance pool.
Q: Can I hold a perpetual futures contract indefinitely?A: Yes, provided you maintain sufficient margin and pay funding fees every eight hours. No expiration date exists, but rollover is unnecessary.
Q: Why does my unrealized PnL fluctuate even when price hasn’t moved?A: Unrealized PnL updates against mark price—not last price—and mark price incorporates index feeds and funding adjustments, causing minor deviations during low-volume intervals.
Q: Is there a difference between isolated and cross margin modes?A: In isolated margin, only allocated funds back a single position; in cross margin, the entire wallet balance serves as collateral for all open positions, increasing systemic risk exposure.
