What is an initial margin in crypto futures?

Initial margin is the collateral required to open a leveraged futures position—acting as a loss buffer—while maintenance margin is the lower threshold needed to avoid liquidation.

Definition and Purpose of Initial Margin

1. Initial margin is the minimum amount of collateral a trader must deposit to open a leveraged futures position on a cryptocurrency exchange.

2. It acts as a financial guarantee that the trader can absorb potential losses before the position is subject to liquidation.

3. Unlike spot trading, futures contracts require upfront margin because obligations are settled at a future date and price volatility is inherently higher.

4. Exchanges calculate initial margin based on contract size, leverage level, and the asset’s historical volatility.

5. This margin is held in the trader’s margin wallet and remains locked until the position is closed or adjusted.

How Initial Margin Differs from Maintenance Margin

1. Maintenance margin is a lower threshold than initial margin and represents the minimum balance required to keep an open position active.

2. If the account equity falls below the maintenance margin due to adverse price movement, a margin call is triggered.

3. Initial margin is always higher — typically 1.5x to 3x the maintenance margin depending on the exchange and contract type.

4. While initial margin enables position entry, maintenance margin governs position survival during market fluctuations.

5. A failure to meet maintenance margin does not automatically close the trade on all platforms; some allow partial liquidation or forced top-up requests.

Calculation Example Using BTC/USDT Futures

1. Assume a trader opens a 10x leveraged long position on BTC/USDT with a notional value of $10,000.

2. The exchange sets initial margin requirement at 10% for this leverage tier.

3. Therefore, the trader must deposit $1,000 as initial margin before execution.

4. If BTC price drops sharply and unrealized loss reaches $800, equity falls to $200 — well below the maintenance margin of $500.

5. At that point, the exchange initiates liquidation unless additional funds are added manually.

Risk Implications of Low Initial Margin Requirements

1. Some decentralized exchanges offer initial margins as low as 2%, enabling extreme leverage up to 50x.

2. Such low thresholds amplify sensitivity to slippage and funding rate spikes during high-volatility events.

3. Flash crashes have repeatedly caused cascading liquidations when initial margin buffers proved insufficient across multiple positions.

4. Traders often misinterpret low initial margin as reduced risk, while in reality it compresses the price range within which positions remain viable.

5. Historical data shows that accounts opened with less than 5% initial margin suffer liquidation rates over 68% higher than those using 10% or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can initial margin be paid in stablecoins or only in the base asset?A: Most centralized exchanges accept both — for BTC/USDT futures, USDT is standard, but some allow BTC or ETH as margin if cross-margin mode is enabled.

Q: Is initial margin returned after closing a position?A: Yes, the original initial margin is released back to the margin wallet along with any realized profit or loss — minus fees and possible insurance fund deductions.

Q: Does initial margin change during the life of a position?A: It remains fixed at the time of entry unless the exchange adjusts its margin policy globally — in which case existing positions are usually grandfathered under original terms.

Q: What happens if the exchange suffers a technical outage during liquidation?A: Liquidation logic runs on exchange servers independently of UI access; downtime does not pause margin monitoring — positions still get liquidated if conditions are met server-side.
