What Is Gate.io Cross Margin Trading Risk?

Cross Margin Trading Mechanics
1. Cross margin trading on Gate.io allows users to utilize their entire account balance as collateral across all open positions within the same trading pair group.
2. Unlike isolated margin, where risk is confined to a single position, cross margin aggregates equity from all eligible assets to maintain margin requirements.
3. The system automatically draws from available USDT, BTC, ETH, and other supported stablecoins or major cryptocurrencies when margin calls occur.
4. Liquidation triggers when the total margin ratio falls below 100%, calculated as (Total Collateral Value / Total Position Value) × 100%.
5. Gate.io applies real-time mark price updates sourced from multiple external feeds to determine liquidation thresholds, minimizing manipulation risks.
Liquidation Protocol Behavior
1. Once the margin ratio drops to 110%, Gate.io initiates partial liquidation by closing the largest losing position first.
2. If the ratio continues falling to 105%, secondary positions are progressively closed until the ratio recovers above 110% or all positions are terminated.
3. Full liquidation occurs at 100% margin ratio, with remaining assets converted into USDT at the bankruptcy price.
4. Users retain any surplus after debt settlement but forfeit all unrealized PnL associated with closed positions.
5. Gate.io does not charge forced liquidation fees; however, taker fees apply during automatic order execution.
Funding Rate Exposure
1. Cross margin positions in perpetual contracts are subject to hourly funding rate payments based on the difference between mark price and index price.
2. Long positions pay funding to short positions when the rate is positive; the reverse occurs when it is negative.
3. Accumulated unpaid funding is deducted from equity every hour, directly impacting available margin.
4. During high-volatility events, funding rates may spike beyond ±0.75%, accelerating equity erosion for leveraged longs or shorts.
5. Gate.io displays live funding rate forecasts for the next eight hours on the derivatives dashboard.
Collateral Conversion Rules
1. Non-stablecoin collateral such as BTC or ETH is valued using a 30-minute time-weighted average price from Binance, OKX, and Bybit spot markets.
2. A dynamic haircut is applied: BTC carries a 5% discount, ETH 8%, and altcoins up to 25% depending on liquidity depth.
3. When collateral value drops below 120% of required margin, Gate.io issues a warning notification via email and app push.
4. Users may manually add more collateral at any time without triggering revaluation delays.
5. No automatic conversion occurs unless liquidation is initiated; manual swaps between collateral types require explicit user action.
Common Questions & Answers
Q1: Does Gate.io allow partial repayment of cross margin debt?Yes. Users can repay portions of borrowed assets at any time through the margin wallet interface without affecting open positions.
Q2: Can I hold both isolated and cross margin positions simultaneously on Gate.io?Yes. The platform maintains separate margin wallets for each mode, preventing interference between strategies.
Q3: What happens to unused cross margin collateral after all positions close? All unallocated collateral remains in the cross margin wallet and is immediately available for new trades or withdrawal.
Q4: Is there a minimum balance requirement to activate cross margin trading?Users must hold at least 10 USDT equivalent in verified assets and complete Level 2 KYC verification before enabling cross margin functionality.
