How to find your recovery phrase on Coinbase Wallet? (Security Settings)

To view your 12-word recovery phrase in Coinbase Wallet, go to Security Settings via the profile icon, authenticate biometrically, and tap each obscured word—no screenshots or digital copies allowed.

Mar 22, 2026 at 08:39 pm

Accessing Security Settings in Coinbase Wallet

1. Open the Coinbase Wallet mobile application on your iOS or Android device.

2. Tap the profile icon located in the top-right corner of the home screen.

3. Select Security Settings from the dropdown menu.

4. Enter your biometric authentication or passcode to proceed.

5. Scroll down to locate the section labeled Recovery Phrase.

Viewing Your Recovery Phrase

1. Tap on the Recovery Phrase option inside Security Settings.

2. Confirm your identity again using fingerprint, face scan, or wallet passcode.

3. The 12-word phrase will appear one word at a time — tap each word to reveal it fully.

4. A warning banner appears reminding users that this phrase grants full access to all assets and cannot be recovered if lost.

5. No copy-paste functionality is enabled; manual transcription is required for secure backup.

Why the Recovery Phrase Cannot Be Exported Digitally

1. Coinbase Wallet deliberately disables screenshot capture while viewing the recovery phrase on supported devices.

2. The interface obscures words until tapped, preventing accidental exposure during screen sharing or recording.

3. Digital export would introduce risks such as clipboard logging, cloud sync leaks, or malware interception.

4. Storing the phrase outside the app violates the non-custodial principle Coinbase Wallet adheres to.

5. Every attempt to interact with external apps during phrase display triggers an immediate auto-logout.

Common Mistakes When Handling the Recovery Phrase

1. Taking screenshots or photos of the phrase even once compromises long-term security.

2. Saving the phrase in unencrypted notes, emails, or messaging apps creates irreversible exposure vectors.

3. Sharing the phrase with customer support representatives is unnecessary and dangerous — no legitimate service will ever ask for it.

4. Using password managers to store the phrase defeats the purpose of air-gapped key management.

5. Writing it on paper stored near the device increases physical theft risk without adding redundancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I reset or change my recovery phrase after setting up Coinbase Wallet?A: No. The recovery phrase is generated once during wallet creation and cannot be altered. A new wallet must be created to obtain a different phrase.

Q: Does Coinbase Wallet store my recovery phrase on their servers?A: No. Coinbase Wallet is a non-custodial wallet. The recovery phrase exists only on your device and never transmits to any remote server.

Q: What happens if I forget my wallet passcode but still have the recovery phrase?A: You can reinstall the app and restore full access using the 12-word phrase. The passcode is only a local unlock mechanism.

Q: Is the recovery phrase the same as my Coinbase.com account recovery key?A: No. The Coinbase.com recovery key is unrelated to the Coinbase Wallet recovery phrase. They serve entirely separate systems and cryptographic domains.
