What Is Crypto Leverage?
Leverage in cryptocurrency trading refers to the use of borrowed capital to increase the potential return on an investment. Traders deposit a fraction of the total position value—known as margin—and the exchange or broker supplies the remainder. This mechanism enables exposure to larger positions without committing full capital upfront.
For example, with 10x leverage, a $1,000 margin controls a $10,000 position. The profit or loss is calculated based on the full $10,000—not the $1,000 deposited. This magnifies both gains and losses proportionally.

How 5x Leverage Works
1. A trader deposits 2 BTC as initial margin to open a long position on BTC/USDT.

4. Order book depth becomes critical: slippage on large liquidations can widen effective loss beyond theoretical calculations.
5. Risk engine parameters—including mark price sourcing and index price deviation thresholds—are calibrated more tightly at this tier to manage cascading liquidations.
How 20x Leverage Works
1. A 20x position amplifies every 0.5% move in the asset into a 10% shift in margin balance.
2. Entry timing dominates performance: even precise directional calls suffer if volatility spikes within minutes of opening.
3. Insurance funds on major exchanges absorb partial losses during extreme gaps, but coverage is capped and not guaranteed across all pairs.
4. Cross-margin mode increases systemic exposure—losses from one position may draw down equity supporting others.
