What is the issuance and circulation of XLM coins?
The current circulating supply of XLM coins is estimated to be around 50.8%, with 25 billion XLM remaining in the Stellar Development Foundation's reserves for future distribution.
Oct 05, 2024 at 07:59 pm

Issuance and Circulation of XLM Coins
Issuance:
- The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) issued a total supply of 50 billion XLM coins in 2014.
- 25 billion XLM (50%) were distributed through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO).
- The remaining 25 billion XLM (50%) are reserved by SDF for future distribution.
Circulating Supply:
- As of August 2023, approximately 25.4 billion XLM (50.8%) are in circulation.
- The rest of the 25 billion XLM remain in SDF's designated accounts.
Distribution Mechanism:
SDF periodically distributes XLM from its reserves to support the Stellar ecosystem, including:
- Funding projects that align with Stellar's mission
- Rewarding contributors to the network
- Partnerships to promote XLM adoption
Burn Mechanism:
- SDF implements a unique "Inflation Suppression" mechanism, where a small percentage of XLM is burned from transactions to offset inflation.
Secondary Markets:
- XLM coins are traded on numerous cryptocurrency exchanges worldwide, including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken.
- The liquidity of XLM is relatively high, making it accessible for buying and selling.
Future Issuance:
- SDF has no plans to issue additional XLM coins beyond the initial supply.
- The circulating supply is expected to gradually increase as SDF distributes XLM from its reserves.
