Who is the Founder of ApeCoin?

ApeCoin, a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and the native token of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) ecosystem, was created by two entities: Yuga Labs and anonymous individuals.

Yuga Labs

Yuga Labs is a Miami-based technology company founded in 2021 by Greg Solano, Wylie Aronow, Kerem Atalay, and Zeshan Ali. Yuga Labs is the creator of BAYC, a collection of 10,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs) that have become a cultural phenomenon, garnering widespread popularity among celebrities, influencers, and NFT enthusiasts. The company also created CryptoPunks, another renowned NFT collection, and the Otherside metaverse project.

Anonymous Individuals

ApeCoin was also conceived by a group of anonymous individuals who wanted to create a community-owned and controlled token within the BAYC ecosystem. These individuals are known only by their pseudonyms, such as "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" and "No Sass."

Details of ApeCoin's Creation

The creation of ApeCoin involved the following steps:

  • Initial Idea and Concept: The concept of ApeCoin originated from both Yuga Labs and the anonymous group to cater to the growing BAYC community and establish a governance token for the ecosystem.
  • Development and Launch: ApeCoin was developed and launched on March 17, 2022, with an initial supply of 1 billion tokens. Approximately 15% of the tokens were allocated to Yuga Labs, 8% to BAYC holders, and 6% to CryptoPunks holders.
  • DAO Formation: Following the token launch, the ApeCoin DAO was formed to enable token holders to participate in the decision-making process regarding the ecosystem's future and the use of DAO funds.
  • Governance Mechanism: ApeCoin holders could participate in the DAO governance process through voting on proposals and initiatives related to the ecosystem's development and its funds allocation.
  • Community Involvement: ApeCoin's creators emphasized the importance of community involvement and ownership in the token's development and governance. The DAO structure allowed community members to have a say in the token's use and the ecosystem's growth.
  • Integration and Adoption: ApeCoin quickly gained adoption and integration with various NFT marketplaces, exchanges, and decentralized applications (dApps) within the Web3 ecosystem.
