How to use the Braavos wallet? (Starknet ecosystem)
To set up Braavos, download the extension or app, create a new wallet, securely back up your 12-word phrase, set a password, and confirm the backup—no email or SMS needed.
Mar 07, 2026 at 12:00 am
Setting Up the Braavos Wallet
1. Visit the official Braavos website and download the extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Brave browsers. The wallet is also available as a mobile app on iOS and Android.
2. Click “Create New Wallet” to initiate the setup process. A new Starknet account will be generated using Cairo-compatible key derivation.
3. Carefully back up the 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the sole method to restore access if the device is lost or compromised.
4. Set a strong password for local encryption. This password does not grant access to funds without the seed phrase.
5. Confirm the backup by re-entering random words from the phrase in the correct order. No confirmation email or SMS is required.
Connecting to Starknet Applications
1. Open a dApp built on Starknet, such as JediSwap, Avnu, or SithSwap. Look for the “Connect Wallet” button, usually located in the top-right corner.
2. Select Braavos from the wallet list. A pop-up window appears requesting permission to connect your account address.
3. Review the requested permissions — Braavos only shares your public address unless explicit signature requests are made.
4. Click “Approve” to establish the connection. The dApp interface updates to reflect your balance and interactable positions.
5. Some dApps require switching networks manually. Braavos supports both Starknet Mainnet and Sepolia Testnet; ensure the correct network is selected before transacting.
Sending and Receiving Tokens
1. Click the “Send” button inside the wallet interface. Paste the recipient’s Starknet address, which always begins with 0x.
2. Enter the amount and select the token. Braavos natively supports STRK, ETH, DAI, USDC, and other ERC-20 tokens deployed on Starknet.
3. Adjust fee settings using the slider. Braavos displays estimated gas fees in ETH and STRK, reflecting current network congestion.
4. Review all transaction details including destination, amount, and fee. A red warning appears if the address is unverified or lacks transaction history.
5. Confirm with your password or biometric authentication. The transaction is signed locally and broadcast to the Starknet sequencer.
Managing Account Abstraction Features
1. Braavos leverages Account Abstraction (AA) to enable session keys, social recovery, and batched transactions. These features appear under the “Security & Recovery” tab.
2. Create a session key to delegate limited transaction rights to a dApp without exposing your main private key.
3. Add guardians for social recovery — other Braavos accounts or email-based signers that can assist in restoring access after threshold approval.
4. Use the “Batch” function to combine multiple actions — such as approve + swap + claim — into one atomic transaction.
5. View past session keys and revoke them at any time. Revocation takes effect immediately upon on-chain confirmation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I import an existing Argent X wallet into Braavos?A: Yes. During wallet creation, choose “Import Wallet” and enter the 12-word seed phrase. Braavos uses the same BIP-39 standard and Cairo key derivation as Argent X.
Q: Why does Braavos show two different addresses for the same account?A: One is the legacy Cairo 0 contract address; the other is the newer Cairo 1 universal account address. Both control the same funds but interact differently with contracts.
Q: Does Braavos support hardware wallets?A: Not directly. Braavos operates as a software wallet with local signing. However, it can interact with dApps that integrate Ledger via WebUSB when used with compatible Starknet bridges.
Q: What happens if I forget my password but still have the seed phrase?A: You can fully restore the wallet using the seed phrase on a fresh installation. The password only protects local storage — it does not encrypt the private key itself.
