The 1909 Lincoln Penny was the first U.S. coin to feature a president's portrait. Designed by renowned sculptor Victor David Brenner, the coin showcased Lincoln's likeness on the obverse and Brenner's initials, “VDB,” on the reverse, displayed prominently below the wheat stalks.

However, public backlash erupted over the visibility of Brenner's initials on the coin. In response, the U.S. Mint quickly removed them from the design shortly after production began. This resulted in two distinct varieties of the 1909 Lincoln Penny:

1909 VDB Penny: This variety features Brenner's initials, “VDB,” on the reverse, below the wheat stalks.

1909 Penny: This common variety lacks the “VDB” initials on the reverse.

The presence or absence of the “VDB” initials is the key factor that determines the value of 1909 Lincoln Pennies. While the regular 1909 Penny is valued at around $0.44 in G4 condition, the 1909 VDB Penny is significantly more valuable, fetching an average price of $104.
