The bipartisan stablecoin bill, once considered a sure win as it quickly passed through the Senate Banking Committee in March, is now in jeopardy as congressional Democrats are pulling their support for the legislation.

Some of the Democrats' criticism was more pointed.

The new resistance isn't to legislation of any kind. Both parties have said they want to see a crypto law. But as concern over corruption in the industry has grown, Trump's actions appear to be impacting the willingness among Democrats to lower guardrails in the space.

The president has been personally involved in a range of crypto ventures, including the issuance of his own meme coin ahead of his inauguration, an involvement in a new stablecoin, a possible family stake in Binance and a partnership between the Trump Media & Technology Group and crypto.com. He will also be present at a dinner for the top holders of his $Trump memecoin, an event that has drawn the scrutiny of even some Republican backers, such as crypto-supporting Sen. Cynthia Lummis.

That involvement has led some to express concern.

It creates the appearance of a conflict of interest and could undermine public trust in the administration's efforts to regulate this new and rapidly evolving industry."

The administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Tuesday, Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley introduced the End Crypto Corruption Act, a bill that would bar the president and other high-ranking government officials from issuing, sponsoring, or endorsing digital assets.
