Memecoin

A newborn Thai hippo named Moo Deng has not only charmed zoo visitors and social media followers, but she's now also the face of a $100 million memecoin.

The Solana-based token surged past the milestone on Thursday, marking one of the fastest-growing tokens to hit that level from virtually zero in recent months, according to CoinMarketCap.

While Moo Deng herself is Thai, the project isn't tied to Thailand in any formal capacity. Udomsak Rakwongwan, a professor at Kasetsart University and co-founder of the decentralized exchange FWX.Finance, noted that other Thai-themed tokens in the past haven't seen the same success.

"There have been meme tokens in Thailand before, but they didn't really take off because they were too localized," Rakwongwan explained.

One such example was a token centered around Thailand's ex-junta prime minister, which went viral but failed to gain significant market traction. "Moo Deng is different," he added, pointing out that the hippo has gained global attention, making the token appealing to a much broader audience.
