The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has been hovering around Rp1.56 billion (around $95,000) and transaction fees are also increasing post-halving 2024. This has once again brought crypto mining into the spotlight. But as technology advances rapidly, an interesting question arises. Can modern gaming PCs, which boast powerful specs like RTX 4090 for optimal gaming performance, still be used to mine Bitcoin effectively?
The short answer is no, they can’t. Here’s a complete analysis of why.
What Is Bitcoin Mining and What Are the Challenges?
Mining is the process of verifying transactions on the blockchain to generate new Bitcoins. The system uses a proof of work (PoW) consensus mechanism, where miners compete to find a valid hash according to the current network difficulty. The first miner to find the hash will receive a reward of 3,125 BTC plus transaction fees.
However, the mining difficulty in 2025 is extremely high. It takes an average of 10³¹ hash attempts to generate one valid block. This process is energy-intensive, consuming enough electricity to power a US household for more than 10 years. Therefore, the hardware used in mining plays a crucial role in efficiency and profitability.
Evolution of Mining Devices: From CPU to ASIC
At its inception in 2009, Bitcoin mining could be performed with a regular CPU. As the number of miners grew, they began using GPUs due to their superior capabilities. But when ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) were introduced around 2015, there was a significant shift in efficiency standards.
ASICs are specifically designed for mining Bitcoin and are significantly faster and more energy-efficient than GPUs. Since then, ASICs have dominated the mining ecosystem, and they remain the preferred choice today.
While modern gaming PCs are equipped with powerful GPUs like RTX 4090, which is capable of performing billions of hashes per second, and can mine altcoins efficiently, its performance in mining Bitcoin is still significantly lower compared to ASICs. For instance, the RTX 4090 can generate hundreds of megahashes per second.

GPU vs. ASIC Performance: A Million-Fold Difference
To put this into perspective, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090, one of the most advanced gaming GPUs available, can generate around 450 megahashes per second (MH/s) in cryptocurrency mining. However, dedicated ASICs, such as the Antminer S21 Pro, can achieve speeds of up to 200 terahashes per second (TH/s).
This difference is staggering; 1 TH/s is equal to 1,000 MH/s, meaning the Antminer S21 Pro is more than a million times faster than the RTX 4090. In terms of power consumption, the RTX 4090 uses about 450 watts of power. In contrast, the Antminer S21 Pro consumes around 3,500 watts of power.
Despite the higher energy footprint, ASICs are superior in terms of power-to-yield ratio. The S21 Pro has a reported energy efficiency of 17.5 joules per terahash (J/TH), while the RTX 4090 manages around 0.67 kilojoules per megahash (kJ/MH).
Economic Impact: Is It Worth It?
Considering the cost of electricity, maintenance, and potential hardware damage, mining Bitcoin with a gaming PC in 2025 is not economically viable. The chances of an individual miner finding a block are extremely slim. Joining a mining pool is an option, but the small contribution from a GPU means the revenue share will be minimal.
Moreover, GPUs are not designed for continuous operation over long periods. Constant mining can accelerate wear and tear on the hardware, void any warranty, and may lead to premature component failure.
Cryptocurrencies That Can Still Be Mined with a Gaming PC
While Bitcoin is not ideal for mining with a GPU in 2025 due to the efficiency and performance standards of ASICs, some other cryptocurrencies are still better suited for mining with gaming PCs. Some examples include:
