Changpeng Zhao, founder and former CEO of Binance, recently sat down for an hour-long interview with Mena Suvari’s husband, Farokh. In the interview, Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, shares insights into his time in prison, thoughts on the memecoin crypto craze, and hints at future plans beyond Binance.
Changpeng Zhao on His Time in Prison
Having come back from prison and missed the initial memecoin evolution, Changpeng Zhao calls memecoin crypto “trenching” a hard yet interesting experience. He also shows empathy for memecoin traders, recognizing how they stay in group chats all day long following new memecoin launches and market activity.
“I feel bad for them because they’re working so hard. They’re in the group chats from morning to night, they’re the ones who are testing all the new coins and getting rugged,” Changpeng Zhao said.
Changpeng Zhao mentions feeling somewhat tricked when people encouraged him to post his dog’s name and photo, which led to the launch of thousands of Broccoli Coins.
Reflecting on his prison experience, Changpeng Zhao shares, “It made me realize what’s important: health is the most important, and second is family.” This experience made him much more cautious. Changpeng Zhao recognized how political agendas can personally affect him, even though he was never in tune with them.
He further adds, “I don’t wish prison time on anyone. Sam Bankman-Fried, maybe, because he was lying and cheating on people. But I still feel bad for anyone who goes to prison. It’s not a fun time.” Changpeng Zhao recognized that U.S. prison sentences tend to be long and often don’t offer much in terms of rehabilitation.
Additionally, Changpeng Zhao mentions how fortunate the crypto industry is to have a U.S. president who is very pro-crypto. Although he notes that he has never personally communicated with Trump.
Changpeng Zhao on His Future Plans
Wrapping up the interview, Changpeng Zhao says he was lucky to have had a forced retirement. Most people would have said Changpeng Zhao ran out of stamina, but that isn’t true. He adds that he no longer sees himself holding the position of Binance CEO in the future.
