Chain Abstraction: The Next Frontier for Crypto and Web3 Adoption
During the recent BUIDL Asia conference in Seoul, South Korea, Illia Polosukhin, co-founder of Near Protocol, highlighted the transformative potential of chain abstraction in propelling the growth and mainstream adoption of the cryptocurrency space and Web3.
Chain abstraction revolves around the principle of shielding end-users from the intricate technological underpinnings of Web3 by simplifying and streamlining the application development process. This approach essentially conceals the complexities of blockchain technology, allowing users to interact with it more seamlessly. For instance, on the Near blockchain network, users can create and recover accounts using familiar email addresses rather than managing complex seed phrases.
"The goal is to remove blockchain as a barrier to entry and participation by abstracting it away from the user experience," said Polosukhin.
However, the path towards chain abstraction is not without potential challenges. During a fireside chat at BUIDL, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin expressed concerns about a potential "desensitization" to security issues as various blockchain networks become increasingly interconnected.
While acknowledging the possibility of reduced security awareness among end-users in a chain abstraction environment, Polosukhin remains optimistic about the overall trajectory towards more decentralized and secure systems within the Web3 ecosystem.
"Sophisticated intermediaries that provide liquidity, routing, and handling the intricacies of each blockchain will have a vested interest in maintaining the security and decentralization of the network," he explained. "If they identify any vulnerabilities, they will simply withdraw their support."
Buterin emphasized the significance of account abstraction, a concept that conceals the technical details of on-chain applications while prioritizing both security and convenience.
In a significant development, the Near Foundation recently unveiled Chain Signatures, a protocol that empowers users to authorize transactions on multiple blockchains using a single Near account. This protocol is currently live on Near's testnet, with its mainnet launch anticipated in early May.
Polosukhin anticipates a significant shift away from centralized exchanges towards more ubiquitous non-custodial and decentralized applications. "Users will gain access to a comprehensive ecosystem offering a range of services, such as multichain decentralized exchanges, lending platforms, NFT interaction, and more," he said.
Blockchain and the Mitigation of AI Risks
Polosukhin went on to discuss the potential of blockchain technology in mitigating risks associated with the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI).
"It is inevitable that AI will be exploited for malicious purposes," Polosukhin told The Block. "Governments are actively investigating the use of AI by North Korea and other nations to develop malicious software for cyberattacks."
"Cryptography and blockchains can serve as defensive mechanisms by providing content verification and reputation systems to safeguard against these threats," he added.
By decoupling the complexities of blockchain technology from the user experience, chain abstraction is poised to unlock the broader adoption of cryptocurrencies and Web3 applications. While security concerns warrant ongoing vigilance, the potential for more secure and user-friendly systems remains a driving force in the evolution of this transformative technology.
