Solana-based decentralized exchange protocol Drift Protocol has made a significant move by announcing the launch of its governance token, DRIFT.

This major milestone will be commemorated with a massive DRIFT airdrop to current users. Established in 2021 by Cindy Leow and David Lu, Drift Protocol stands as one of the foundational projects on the Solana blockchain. Since its inception, the protocol has grown to serve over 180,000 traders, accumulating an aggregate trading volume exceeding $20 billion.

As per the April 16 announcement, Drift's governance token aims to empower users by providing them with "tangible ownership" of the protocol and a "meaningful voice" in guiding the project's development trajectory through the Drift DAO.

The Drift DAO will function as a multi-structured decentralized autonomous organization comprising three branches. These include the Realms DAO for Protocol development and Security Council elections, the Security Council for Protocol upgrades and parameterization, and the Futarchy DAO for ecosystem projects, grants, and developer funding.

As part of the launch, the protocol will airdrop 100 million DRIFT to "loyal Drift users, including early traders (OGs) and participants in the Trader Points program." This launch airdrop will constitute 10% of DRFIT's 1 billion supply.

According to the announcement, DRIFT's total supply will be distributed over five years, with over 50% allocated to the community. The protocol has stated that further details regarding airdrop eligibility criteria will be released in due course.
