The world's second-largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum, experienced its largest 24-hour gain since 2021 on Thursday, fueled by investor optimism surrounding the Pectra upgrade and a broader rally in the cryptocurrency market.
Where is Bitcoin price headed next?
Bitcoin's price surged above $100,000 for the first time in three months on Thursday.
Pectra, the most significant change to Ethereum since the “Merge” in 2022, represents a substantial hard fork in the cryptocurrency's protocol. It consolidates validator operations by increasing the staking limit and enhances wallet usability and smart contract functionality.
The positive market response to the Pectra upgrade provides welcome relief for Ethereum, which had declined by 40% this year.
Moreover, analysts highlight that Ethereum's blockchain growth has stagnated since 2021.
The upgrade also coincides with a broader upswing in the crypto sector, with the 20 largest digital assets rising by over 10% in recent trading sessions.
Pectra initiates Ethereum's transition to the “EVM Object Format (EOF),” a new structure designed to enhance the efficiency of smart contracts.
As Ethereum's primary scaling solution, optimism around Pectra is high among crypto traders.
"It will also make it easier for developers to build decentralized applications (dapps) and deploy them on Ethereum, further increasing the cryptocurrency's utility and scaling capabilities," said Ben Rockwell, a cryptocurrency analyst at Rockwell Capital Management.
While most Wall Street analysts do not provide price targets for Ethereum, its three-month performance reveals a 29% decrease in price over the past 12 weeks. In contrast, Bitcoin's price has risen by 70% over the same period.
